Why do you sometimes see mega carrier trucks doing 70+ on flat grade?

I tried that one time. The speedo didn't work and the OmniTracs started displaying error codes and emailing my terminal manager because the speedometer reading (which was zero) differed from the vehicle's GPS speed. The truck still didn't run over 70. I don't know if it was because of the GPS signal or if the engine RPM is limited in top gear.

I dug around in the last truck I had with a Qualcomm terminal (it's not pronounced QUELLCOM, but QWALCOM). In the mobile terminal there are quite a few items monitored, including how long you idle, how long you are over the max truck speed and seconds spent Out Of Gear. All of that and more is sent back to the company. Drivers should assume whatever they and the truck are doing is going to be known by the company.

Back in the day when we had mechanical fuel pumps there was a place out in Winnemucca that for $75 would break the seal turn it up and replace the seal and nobody was none the wiser.

May have one of those SafePass boxes on them. When they’re on they feed a constant limiter speed signal to the ECM and let the engine spin up to whatever it will run to. Lots of those on fleet tractors up here since the speed limiter reg.

It's hard to tell anymore what speed a truck is capable of by the name on the side. A lot of the companies have been changing their speeds to attract drivers in the past couple of years. TMC used to snail down the road at 62 and are now doing 65+. Prime is all over the place with their speeds. Same with Schneider. May has some at 65 and others faster than that. Crete/Shaffer are up to 68. I can't figure out Werner since they are all seem to be doing different speeds, etc.

Soon everyone will be doing the same speed when the new truck governor speed rules come into effect.

First I saw the rpm limited in high gear thing was a small fleet here bought some trucks programmed like that. They were baffled and for a long time couldn’t figure out why they couldn’t get any fuel mileage out of those trucks. The trucks were delivered with the high gear rpm limit, but no road speed limiter set. Took the drivers about 10 minutes to figure out if they ran it down a split at whatever it would turn up to and keep the pistons in it they went faster. Truck drivers are devious like that.
