Hi, y'all!
I've been off the road for a couple of years. I could not find decent work in the last two years and just gave up looking. I did some local work in 2023 and then was a delivery driver last year, but long commutes and low pay are making me think about getting back on the road. I'm specifically looking to get into a regional or dedicated lane. I am absolutely NOT going to drive for mileage pay and I want to be home on Sunday. I don't want to sit around in a dock for 8-12 hours and not get paid the detention I was promised, so I'm not going to entertain any arguments about mileage pay. For a 55-70 hour per week job, I don't feel like I'm asking for a whole lot.
I guess I'm here to ask what companies are willing to forgive me for the sin of being off the road the last couple of years, hire me, and pay a daily or hourly rate. I still have my Class A CDL, a clean record, a current medical card, and a few years' driving experience.
Been off the road for a couple of years. Looking to get back on...

By the time you are out of the truck 30-365 days SOME companies stop being able to hire you because your CDL experience isn't recent. Then as you increase that time to 3 years you increase the number of companies that can't hire you due to lack of recent experience. BUT some companies can hire you if you complete a "refresher course". The warning is DO NOT GO TAKE A REFRESHER COURSE UNTIL YOU HAVE A JOB LINED UP. Not all companies can hire you with the refresher course and some companies may want a refresher course completed at a particular CDL school. I don't know how much a refresher course costs, but I think it's $1,000 to 1/3 of a full CDL course.
The main point being, you aren't looking for the average job with the average pay if you have the average experience. You only need ONE job, so don't give up if there are not 20-30 companies willing to hire you today. Keep looking and doing research, you calling trucking companies and talking to them directly, and following up on leads you get online from this forum.Wargames and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Hogan does post fake jobs so DYOR. I do essentially the same job currently and only make $300 a day, with a different company, I get no mileage pay.

With that sketchy job history, you should consider a temp. agency & work when you want to.
With a temp agency you can work for several companies, but your job history will only show the temp agency.
There's several temp agencies that hire cdl drivers.
Here's one of them:
