    You are still "The Captain of your Ship", it's your responsibility to read and abide by all posted weight limit signs wether changed 2 days ago or not. But you stars keep on gettin ticketed. All you are doing is making the ones who pay attention look more gooder all the time thanks. And when all you sloppy slug drivers are gone, the rates for us good drivers will go up and up. Thanks for all your hekp.

    yeh right, and you have never accidently gone down a restricted road in your 10 years of driving? It could be dificult to see that 5 ton weight limit sign at nite. or even in the daylite you come up to it and there is no place else to go but over it. this is just another scam against truckers.

    There are many roads that a 80,000 lbs vehicle cannot be on.

    A friend was in Kentucky delivering his load. To get to the receiver, he had to go down a road that was limited to 18,000 lbs and he was 80,000.

    There was no other route to get there and he was fined for the transit.

    Something that people don't realize is that when a bridge has a posted weight limit lower than the road, it is because the transportation dept has found the bridge to be unsafe to carry the legal road weight and condemned it. So being that the OP quoted a police officer stating that the bridge has had a weight limit for some time and after a recent inspection it was cut in half because it is "crumbling" really says something about that city.

    I also have to ask if this bridge has been unsafe for years, why is it on a posted truck route? Zone the area as a non-truck route and trucks will not come through. If the bridge is in the middle of a town, chances are trucks only go that way because of the directions the driver recieved from either the shipper or reciever. I got out of the business before on-board GPS units became popular but I would like to see how an industry specific GPS unit lists the bridge.

    Like the above driver mentioned, let the local business owners and the authorities hash it out. I am sure that when revenue drops effecting the local community and lawyers get involved, something will get worked out. After all it was the people in that community that were the ones who did not want to pay to maintain their infra-structure that created the problem to begin with.

    Also, something to think about...

    A lot of the businesses that we have to go.. down roads that we shouldn't be on or aren't allowed on....were there before the weight limits were there. They were there doing business before all the HOUSES were built up around them and decided they didn't want us there. It is the towns that have been built up around the businesses and making it hard on us drivers to get to them, when in all actuallity it is the town trying to force the businesses to move elsewhere. JMO

    I'll give you a break this time seeings how you only have 2 years time behind the wheel and reading BOLs. And the
    Stop it before someone beats you down in here! As an old instructor that isn't really a needed lesson. It's touched on as look at what the BOL says you have and thats about it. The rest is left up to a trainer and how that company handles weight and BOLs. Very few schools will teach sliding tandems as it's not on any CDL test.

    Picking up in the fields there is no scale to weigh melons coming straight from the vine into the trailer.

    There are a few growers that sell by the mellon not the weight and there are some growers/packing plants that use an average weight and some that do weigh each container.

    There are shippers all over that have no idea how much their products weigh even with it printed on the container or box but put a smaller weight on the BOL to lower their cost of shipping.

    NEVER trust the weight on a BOL. ALWAYS if the weight Says 32,000+ pounds head to the nearest scale as at 32,000 you can have a heavy set of axles.

    I can not count the number of times I have slid my axles at the shipper to coincide with the weight on the BOL (after a few years you can tell by product and the way it's loaded about where the axles need to be) only to have to move them again because what the BOL said, the scales say differently.

    I've even had the DOT at scales and border check points down south open my trailer due to mismatched BOL and scale differences! Now that's fun! NOT! You're praying that something wasn't slipped into the "mellons" in the packing room!

    Have the air weight guage on the dash? Use it! BUT back it up with a scale ticket.

    Rollover, I love that air gauge in the cab, between it and how the trailer pulls I can ###### near get everything lined up before the scale. I still hit the scales every load though.
