Hey all, new around these parts and hopefully a future driver in the making.
This is a topic that I've seen surface in several threads on this site and wanted to get some more opinions from those of you that've already been out there.
As the title implies, I'm wondering whether paying out of pocket or using the Gov't assistance program (which I assume pays for the entire schooling with no charge to me) would have any impact on my chances of being hired expediently after graduating?
I've read in several threads that people that used the Gov't assistance were at an advantage of being hired and the ones that paid normally were passed over more, even if the one that paid normally was more qualified. I believe someone said that these companies receive some sort of bonus for hiring the assistance guy?
Any light that could be shed on this would be appreciated.

Any gov't bonus paid for hiring will be applied whether or not the applicant received assistance.
And if you qualify for assistance, why wouldn't you use it?
Especially if it increased you chance of a hire!?
But, I don't really think it would. -
Well the thing is, this assistance is only available to those who are laid off / fired from their job. I still work

I've actually entertained the idea of speaking to my boss and having him "Lay me off" just so this is avail for me, in the event that this hiring advantage rumor is true.

Im in a W.i.a. Cdl class right now its not even really a question Pay $3,800 out of pocket and maybe know how to drive after I get pushed through a class...

I have to be honest and say that I haven't hear of a preference for students who were in a program on Govt assistance. I went through my training using a state grant which paid 100% of my schooling. There were others in my class that paid the full amount themselves. I didn't see any kind of favoritism either way by employers. If you are able to get your training and have no out-of-pocket expense then by all means do so! Its a huge benefit to not have to pay that large lump sum for your CDL. Keep that money in the bank and have it for when you are hired on with a company and out with a trainer making next to nothing while training.

i called the secretary at the school i was cdl trained at she says no trucking company has ever asked if a student was sponsered or self paid. That said the longer courses usually offered at community colleges produced my knowledgable drivers then what i did at Smith and Soloman they really only taught me how to pass the cdl test at NJ DMV

I'm almost finished w/my school. Half paid by me, half by the state thru a grant. In all the times I've spoken w/recruiters over the phone...that's never been asked or been an issue. They are more worried about what driving school you've been thru, not how it's been/being paid for. In all probability, I will most likely qualify to get what I paid out of pocket back from whatever company I get on with...tuition reimbursement. Choose carefully, research thoroughly whatever school you decide to go with-unless you hire on w/a company that will train you.

Whether a student pays out of pocket or gets government grant for school is not the factor to which a company will get a tax break for hiring you. It depends on what the student's household income or military status for company to get tax break for hiring you.
