But black ice is an actual term to describe a very thin layer of ice that is transparent, and very hard to see, since you are seeing the surface below the ice, and due to the refraction of the ice, the surface appears darker than it normally would.

And there are different kinds of ice, depends on the temperature and what impurities there are present. A thin transparent layer of ice has less surface tension, than thicker opaque ice, which has ridges, valleys, which provide something for your tires to grab.

 

Clear ice, rime ice and mixed ice. Oh wait we are talking on the road.....
