Finally figured out why multiple 8-2 splits isn't as good as I thought

It's the same 11 hours limit per shift but yes you can save the 30 minutes a day over the conventional 10 hour break/30 minute break driver.

Actually you do get a full reset, you're just splitting your reset. At my company we must pretrip on duty *before* we start our day so I do it always after the 8 hour sleeper portion, never after the 2 hour which I consider an extended "30".

Yes it counts against the 14 but it also counts as part of your 10 hours off. Just make sure it is in a good place to be offduty doing those things you want to do-- laundry, shower, sightseeing whatever. If you kept a strict 8 and 2 you could still pull over twice at 15 minutes each and still be on par with a 10 hour break/30 minute break driver, nothing lost. Anything more than that, then yes you're chipping away at driving time and I have to wonder how much more than 10 do you need everyday?
Conversely, If you are doing your 10 hour break then your 14 hour day and pullover more than 30 minutes, say 1.5 hours, your 'break' is actually 12 hours.

I do it multiple days in a row no problems. Very efficient way to run. Just recently discovered that anything more than 8 but less than 10 in the sleeper still pauses the 14 so i often build in an 11 hour break by taking 8.5- 9 hours in the sleeper and 2-2.5 hours off duty later to complete the 10 or 11 in this case. It does work for strange scenarios but also good for everyday use as well.

Had one load, 720 miles and only 11:45 on my 70 coming off a 10 hour break. Needed all that time, how was I gonna do it? I did the 2/8/2 trick and rolled into the customer gate 00:01 left on my 70 perfect.

What I like about it, run about 300 miles take a 2, run 300 more take 8+, run 300 take 2 --- rinse and repeat no problems.

So don't discount the 8/2 split just yet.

Unless you have strange/odd sleeping patterns like me.

My problem is that I can not for the life of me stay a sleep for more than 4 - 5 hrs at a time. I am wide awake after. The other problem is that after 5 - 8 hrs of driving,.. I am tired again and need my 4 - 5 hrs of sleep. I rarely ever drive a full 10 - 11 hrs.

    Screw it. Too much thinking.

Loose leaf logs, run until the load is done or the truck is in the ditch. Sleep as freight allows. Never leave the truck, home time costs your boss money.

Oh, wait. This isn't 1999 anymore.

Actually, @Farmerbob1 . . . @scottied67 broke it down for you really good. It 'can be' confusing, but very optimal ~ glad I'm not OTR anymore, tho. Best of luck to ya, man. Welcome to the forum. (did you get bored at the other place, LoL?)

The PTI is a non-issue for me. I simply inspect what I can whenever I stop the truck and get out for any reason. So for me, the PTI is a continuous, ongoing process that doesn't have to be formally completed at the 'end of day'.

IMO, the 8-2 split is only valuable when you need to adjust for a delivery or pickup time outside of your available 14 hour window.

    Thanks!

Didn't get bored at the other place, I embarrassed Brett too many times. The third time he had to resort to editing and deleting my posts to try to make me wrong was apparently my third strike.

I've documented it for ####s and giggles, and have been thinking about letting 4chan know about the amazing tears they could harvest there, but if they did go in to Blow up Mr 'always right' it would hurt a lot of other people there that I have no problem with.

Same thing here. Get off work do stuff about 1.5-2 hours awake then sleep, wake up 6 plus/minus hours later before the alarm goes off usually then pick up laptop, log into TTR to check the gossip for 2 hours, do pretrip and roll. 6-8 hours later I'm wiped out. That's why i like the 8/2 split. I can sit in the saddle for about 5 hours max then take that 2 hour break, then get back in the saddle for 5 more then an 8 hours sleeper.

Are you effing kidding me?!? Man, he's sure full of himself lately, huh? So much for "TRUTH!" I've always admired and respected your posts there. You seem like you know your stuff pretty dang good, for being fairly new at this stuff. I'm "read only" there, btw. Not a member, for those EXACT reasons! So he banned you? Wow. (Have you heard the podcasts? geez....)

@Thull is a member here, too. He was "Theron" and then "Mr.T" there..... they were fixing to bash on him for leaving Swift and going to SNI bulk, so he made the leap. @Charlie Mac is here, as well. I've got Rainy's # and Chickie's twitter if you ever want'em, LoL. My wife is kinda my "keeper of the news" for me regarding the other place. A very ESTEEMED member HERE tried to help over there, and actually got banned within a week. Yeah. PM for details......

ANYWAY... back on topic, Scottie is spot-on ... but so is @windsmith ~ if you need to run a bunch of 8/2 splits for delivery reasons, it's do-able and ... same as Hurst said.... depending on your sleep patterns, may work better. HOWEVER if it's NOT immediately benefittng you to run as such... the traditional 11/14's and the 34 resets will allow you more rest, and time to do stuff for yourself. When I was OTR, I did a mix of both.....to keep my sanity!

    Best wishes to ya, Bob.
