Way i unhook is crank landing gear to ground, back off one turn, dump bags pull out. Backing under to hook up, bags up, you should already know where the trailer is in your mirrors when backing. At that point you should feel the 5th wheel plate make contact with trailer. If you back pass you predetermined point in your mirror. Stop and goal it.

Dropping open deck trailers of glass is so much different. Wind gear until you can just get your foot under there, lower the trailer airbags with the "load/unload" switch, then lower your truck airbags and ease out.

Xeres63 and supersnackbar Thank this.

Funny how everyone has a different way of doing it. Granted an inch or 2 probably doesnt make a huge difference.
In school we were told to dolly down to half an inch above the ground and unhook. I dont think our trucks could dump the air bags there. -
Here an inch of two can make a difference with the plate at the rear on these Peterbilts. The Prostar I was in before coming here could pull out from under a trailer bags inflated with little worry. Our trucks however love catching that plate on the king pin if you don't drop the air bags. If you walk around the yard, you will likely notice a few trucks, especially 15s and 16s have a crescent cut out of that plate.
Ray Strack and Jake997 Thank this. -
Have you ever got to a receiver and REALLY hope they take forever? Let me sleep, please! I don't even care about the detention right now Lol

Dear lord, snow forecasted across MS and AL. Ain't getting into that cluster on 20. Guess I'm stuck with 40.

Drop and hooked my first load today. This wasnt practice but an actual load. Went smooth. Also hooked the empty we swapped out with them. My shifting has improved drastically as well now that i know the shift points for lower gears, upper gears while up shifting and down shifting. Much much smoother. So much more I want to learn and succeed at!
Knocked out 486 miles today too. I wanted to keep going but finding a place to park is hard when it starts getting late.
