The biggest problem I find with new drivers is two fold, first turn off the engine brake, engine brakes are for maintaining speed, brakes are for slowing down.Second slow down before you decide to down shift.
Learn to be consistent, shift up say at 1500 all the time, and down shift at say 1000. Adjust these numbers to fit your truck and situation, but consistency is the best way to stay out of trouble.
A few questions about shifting 8 Speed.

Do the same shift every time.
Slow to about 1100, take her out of gear with clutch in second heartbeat nuetral and rev engine to 1600 roughly, next heartbeat you are in next gear down. Add fuel gently to stay moving. Especially upgrade.
Eventually you will understand any truck and what it likes and hates. Most people make a mistake over revving or overgrinding a gear that will never happen.
Don't stress too much. It's a truck, drive on.
I don't know what they do to you people in Canada, but down here we drive em like we stole em eh? ///teasing.Canadianhauler21, Bean Jr. and Powder Joints Thank this. -
Thirty years from now you will be giving away the advice on how to park a nuclear power submersible 32 trailer transport rocket
Canadianhauler21 Thanks this. -
I had to teach myself to shift on my first load out, took 3 months to get it smooth, up and down.
Approach lights and intersections at a speed you can safely stop with your foot in case your gearing gets messed up. -
Going forward and trying to put in in reverse, it will grind and scream at you. No way will it slip into reverse anyway. And though it shows 8 on the knob, it is actually a 9 speed because we count the LO gear as well.
Canadianhauler21 and x1Heavy Thank this.
