I manage a fleet with 269 of these and handle the troubleshooting for all of their locations. This is a common complaint. It happens because the tablet has nothing to do with the Samsara except for how you interface and see the data.

The vehicle gateway and camera take their power from the +5v pin in the diaganostic port or J-bus cable (depending on which install kit they have). If your truck powers down the feed the gateway goes into hibernate, relying on its internal battery power for basic operation. It will not react to the tablet until the key is cycled to on and it sees +5v for at least a few seconds.

I prefer the systems that use a constant 12v feed but this switched feed to reduce parasitic drain is becoming the new normal.

That would probably explain why my Omnitracs would power down after x amount of time after the truck was turned off and didn’t turn back on again until I turned my truck on (usually). My CB also won’t work unless the ignition is on. Must be the way they wire trucks nowadays.

Not sure why the app can't rely on the tablet's own internal gps location to be honest. My Peoplenet would show the little engine icon on the screen when my truck was shut off, but still was able to locate itself...it would occasionally lose connection with the truck because you would start it up and drive away and notice the engine icon was still there and it didn't go into drive status and switch to the safe mode driving screen...still, I hate Samsara!!!! My next employer, whomever that will be won't have these units or these "artificial ignorance" powered cameras.

On some of the Freightliners I had, the fuse box location for stuff like the CB and the 12v outlets had 3 holes. The power going out to the stuff went thru the middle slot, and one of the side slots was always on(battery) and the other side slot was ignition powered so it would shut down with the key. That way you could choose which way you wanted to have the stuff set up. I prefer my cb to be wired to the ignition so I don't have to remember to turn it off every time I lay down.

Thanks, I crammed as much as I could in north of Dayton so hopefully I will be able to make it out of the frozen tundra before I need any, this time...although, I am stopping for fuel in Albert Lea...maybe I will dribble some more in there just to be sure.

Friend, Bumper, dwells40 and 1 other person Thank this.
