We never backhaul hauling tanks. I run about 120,000 miles a year and 60,000 are MT miles. I’m paid the same as a company driver empty or loaded. All that time not wasted waiting until tomorrow for a backhaul translates to a five day work week. I’ll pull tanks until I set those brakes for the last time ever.

I gotcha beat on deadheading. At Moore, I deadheaded from St. Johns Newfoundland all the way to Spring Hill KS with an empty 45' dry van rolling rack trailer. And my final trailer moves for We-lie was move an empty single drop from Lathrop, CA to Fresno, CA. Then pick up an empty older Wylie double drop and deadhead to Spring Hill, KS. Drop that trailer in Spring Hill, then pick up a damaged Wylie flatbed (that was originally sitting at the same plant in Lathrop I was at that another driver brought back to Spring Hill) and take the damaged trailer to the Mascot shop (eastern Knoxville) for repairs...then bobtail to Church Hill where they accepted a resignation I never offered.LilRedRidingHood, Bumper, Itsbrokeagain and 5 others Thank this.

I worked a year for Maverick dedicated out of Spring Hill. We didn’t do back hauls, ever. I deaheaded back from Quebec City, Quebec once. Your move us almost twice that many miles.
We would do plant transfers to Church Hill. Drop the loaded and grab an empty back to Spring Hill. The next week a church hill dedicated would bring that trailer back with a load, drop it and take back the empty I just brought out.

If there wasn't any glass to move out of the plant you were at, we use to shuttle empty double drops from one plant to another too because Moore was paid for all miles, loaded or empty on those trailers because they were a specialty trailer. We also use to shuttle glass from one plant to another...I've seen a trailer come in from one plant, then the glass transferred from one trailer to another, then shipped right back to the original plant. We use to call it taking the glass on a sight seeing trip.
Our double drops always came back empty. Sometimes the flats or steps got routed to a customer with floor racks that needed returned. But right before we got merged with Wylie, Maverick under cut our rates on some lanes, so some of the regulars had to do back-hauls on certain deliveries...mostly granite out of TX and a few drivers with coil experience backhauled steel. The original owner of Moore found out that it was actually more profitable to deadhead back most of the time because they needed the empty trailer at the glass plant, and if they backhauled something, that tied up the trailer for an extra couple days and they couldn't reload soon enough.Last edited: Sep 3, 2022

Well, it's another hurry up and wait load for me. Told Op's I would be delivering Monday morning (confirmed with the consignee), but nothing was assigned before the office went home on Friday. Would have been nice to know what my next load was, even if it loaded on Tuesday, that way once I got empty I could head towards my next shipper and be ready to load. Now I have to wait until they come in at 7 am PDT on Tuesday to find something, which is one of the downsides of SPD...If you're on the east coast, it's s usually after noon your time before you find out where your headed to pick up.
