i didn’t know that. I thought most trucks that weren’t oversize were restricted to 80k gross. Guess i learn something new everyday

Well they are. But when you’re paid by the load, by the ton, by the bushel or a farmer just trying to get as much in before the co-op closes, “Legalities” are kind of just a suggestion. Under the ag exemption in our state of Kansas there’s different rules during harvest time as well I think. That coupled with most of the farm to mill routes out in the country never cross a scale you can kinda do whatever. When I pulled a belt I was ag exempt, so in KS with a 48’ tri axle trailer I was legal to 90,000 on secondary roads. When we helped with harvest we just filled it up. A coworker of mine zeroed out the scale and had to split weigh in Pratt KS at the co-op and it read up to 120,000.

The place I worked for when I first got my CDL was a chicken plant and they use to do the same thing. We used to have to pass thru the ag inspection places, which normally just waved us locals thru. Every once in a while the state DOT would set up, but usually wouldn't mess with us because they didn't want chicking poop on their uniforms or equipment. That was until a rookie officer stopped the right truck at the right time and weighed us...he was in the low 90's on a 5 axle. In FL, anything up to 86k just gets a ticket, loads over that have to be made legal before they can proceed. The boss had to send out an empty chicken trailer and forklift truck out to fix the load. After that they made the catch crew count how many birds they put in each cage, and each trailer had 2 cages left empty to keep things even so they could be secured evenly, and an extra trailer had to be added to each small chicken house pickup, 2 extra trailers added to large houses. Made the scheduler's job a PITA because during the peak time of the year they barely had enough trailers and cages to keep up, and had issues with having enough live sheds to park the loaded trailers under while they waited to get unloaded. Honestly, I think paying for a higher weight registration would have been an easier solution. All our trucks had heavier axles and frames than standard and our trailers could legally handle the extra weight.

Couln't you just bang the sides of the crate 'till all the passengers took off flapping, just as the man was noting the weight. ;)

Unload went fine, reload went fine. It's a little heavier than they said on the load info...it's 5000 lbs, not 2000 lbs. And it's a chain down load, not a strap load. Ye ole' hours are a bit wonky, so I will deliver this Wednesday morning with enough hours to either pick up right back out of there (@kylefitzy, is Spirit in Tulsa a regular shipper we frequent?), pick up nearby or head to Wichita/Park City for a load and then do a reset close by.
