It’s been years since I’ve been asked to download an app for a broker. But the vast majority of the “broker” freight I do is for our sister companies.

I had 3 or 4 in the 1st 1/2 of the year, but haven't had one since. The last one was when their app wasn't communicating with their computer network properly and when I would stop for more than a 30 min break, it would totally stop tracking me. I had to put my phone in "do not disturb" mode every night because their night shift would call and insist I download the tracking app (that I already had)...I finally told dispatch that if they didn't get the hint that it was their system not mine, and to quit bugging me, I was taking the load back to the shipper and they could move the load with someone else.(The call wouldn't get thru, but when they left a voicemail, I would get a notification via a txt from my cell company, and the only way to turn that off was to stop all txt msg notifications). After that load, I told dispatch that they need to either allow the Samsara to accept their tracking apps, or stop putting me on loads that require tracking because my phone won't be used for that anymore.

Yeah I remember that load. I’m pretty level headed, but I would have come unglued on that ####ing desk jokey calling me in the middle of the night. I let a landstar broker have it for calling me at 0500 one time for a 0600-1500 appointment window. I was less then thrilled.

My company asked me if I was okay with that sort of stuff or not shortly after i started and i said no. They apparently keep a list of what drivers will or won’t haul broker loads that require a tracking app. I haven’t been bothered about those loads since

It’s not my job to keep track of your own freight. My job is to get it from point A to point B in a safe and timely manner. If you want to know where your load is, call my company, not me. All of our trailers have GPS tracking so they’d be able to tell you. If you’re so paranoid about where your freight is, maybe you should look for more reputable carriers to do business with

For me it isn’t so much about the personal information on my phone as it is they have zero reason to do that in the first place. Any reputable company has GPS tracking on their equipment, and obviously ELD’s track your position as well, so finding out where your load is, is as easy as contacting the company. There’s absolutely no reason for tracking apps in today’s world.

And even in the extremely rare case that a trailer is stolen, what’s a tracking app on a drivers phone going to accomplish? Their phone obviously stays with them, not the trailer

All of our trailers have tracking too. Brokers just want to babysit your loads. F… that

Trailer and ELD tracking is only good if a company has 24/7 dispatch. At 16:30-17:00(west coast time) there is a cloud of dust at the SPD corporate yard from all the operations people vacating the office and there isn't anyone in any office that can access that info until Toledo comes in at 8 (eastern).

With our samsara system they can generate tracking links that are load depended. I’ve been on the emails sent to certain customers with the link included. The customers that actually care about where the freight is, puts gps trackers in the actual freight. Probably more then we realize.
