Not that it matters but he probably would be. His program has helped pay off my 12 year old house and 4.5 acres in 6 and a half years and I’ll be completely debt free at 34. With a very healthy Roth 401k and 6 month emergency fund, if we can not completely tank the US dollar in the next 15 years I will be set.

However, if you are even somewhat competent financially, his advice is terrible. Anybody who paid down their mortgage payment the last decade (really the last decade and a half) lost a lot of money by not investing that money in boring/boomer/safe funds that track the S&P500, international stocks and bonds. You could have gone even "riskier" by throwing it all in the S&P500, knowing you have a 2-3 decade investing horizon to weather the downturns. I see zero reason why anybody under 45 needs bonds if your retirement age is early 60's.
It's only when the mortgage rates get up to about 7%, does it then make sense to pay down your mortgage rather than sticking the extra money into a Roth/401k. Traditionally the market has returned 10% with over a century of data to go off from, and if you take away 3% to account for inflation then that gives you a 7% real return on your money, on average, WITH taking inflation into account.
Low interest debt absolutely should not be paid off early, the market is going to beat it if you have at least 2 decades to be in the market.
That's to say nothing of leveraging debt either, which can be smart depending on the circumstances.
But again, Ramsey has his place. In 2025 his information is widely available on the internet, but sometimes people need a spokesperson to give them motivation and a feeling of community. If Ramsey helps people to live decently financially I'm all for it, even if his advice isn't the most efficient financially.Lonesome, Boardhauler, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this. -
