Been looking at other forums for good companies to work for that also does company paid training. Was due to go to C-1 but, lack of money for food while I was training was an issue at that time. So then I proceeded to go to Prime but they denied my application for some reason even though C-1 and CR England accepted me come to find out it was because they were swamped with new applicants and just was denying applications. Been looking for another company but haven't had much luck Was thinking of Stevens Transport but my wife called and they said that you had to have a good work history before they would even recommend you to the school. Not so sure if that's true or not but, Just thought I would ask you all what you thought would be a good starting company. A little about me I am 23 year's old unemployed male living in Missouri Good driving record. No felony convictions but one misdemeanor conviction for property damage over a cell phone being broke. Traveled over the road for 5 years while I was a child with my grandfather. I know all about shifting gears drove a 5 speed to do my driving test and when i was on the truck used to pretend to drive while we were parked for the night. So any insight would be greatly appericated.

Going to a training company is a sure recipe for disaster.
Truthfully you should concentrate on picking up whatever job you can get close to home until you are in a position of getting your CDL on your own (no training company).
Can you live with being away from home for a few weeks at a time? Can you live with being paid less than 500-600/week for doing it? (This is before taxes, BTW)
Your criminal history could also hamper your abilility to get on with a decent company.
All in all I would say you are better off looking at other careers. -
Yes I can handle being on the road and away from home for a few weeks at a time. I as my wife also realize that I would be spending about 4 to 5 weeks out on the road just for maybe 2 days home because if my truck isn't moving then I am not making money is how I see it. Like I said I have been on the road in a semi before with my grandfather when he drove for Gencom out of Marshall Missouri. He back in 98 was making $800 or more a week but was a veteran driver for the company. Trucking is what a driver makes it if he's willing to run he's able to make a good living if he's concerned about always being home then his pay is going to show it. Only reason I am looking at company sponsored training is because I do not have a air brake Truck to go get my CDL I can get the permit in no time but the actual CDL is hard to come by without a truck to get it.

Not all training companies are the same. I went through Prime's training and was making $600 /wk +, after taxes, just during training. After training, as a company solo driver, my average pay was closer to 1k /wk after tax.
I know you said you already tried applying to prime, so that doesn't really help. I don't know a lot about other companies but did look into both c1 and cre, and was, like you, accepted to both as well but didn't go to either. I would just do a lot of research before you commit to one. A lot of trucking companies don't like investing training in people without stable work history, that might limit your options a little.

I would try Roehl they will get you your license and you dont have to sign a contract with them, I wouldnt worry about your misdemeanor.

Millis has good education and equipment

millis is the best deal ive heard of. your cdl will cost you exactly $1300. free up front, 1 year contract, $25 per week for the duration of that year. i wouldnt believe the roehl story without checking it out thoroughly...why on earth would any company train you for free and not expect you to drive for them? sounds impossible to be true. but i do hear decent things about roehl too. STAY AWAY from the crooks at cr england, crst, and swift unless youve exhausted all other options. ive worked for none of them...so this isnt disgruntled exworker syndrome. cre and crst...youll find the bad reviews outweigh the good ones by at least 50 to 1. swift has newly implemented policies that force drivers to log longer times for pretrips, and log on duty at shippers and receivers. thats outright theft of service, since they are not paying for that time.

Celedon opened a school in Indianapolis.
Roehl, Central Refrigerated, Swift have excellent reputation for "quality" of school.

The info about millis is a little off. If accepted you pay 100 to secure your spot in the class then on the first day you pay 400. They put you in a hotel. After schooling you pay 20 a week for school reimbursement and 10 a week for hotel. You have to get your CDL permit and DOT physical prior to going to class. That cost depends on your state. After school you go out with a trainer for a minimum of 5 weeks you have to log 15000 miles with the trainer before you can test out for your own truck. You will take your CDL test in your home state and you schedule that while with your trainer. You do get paid while with trainer just not while in school. School is 3 weeks and then 3 days of orientation. The cost for the school is 4500. You pay the 500 out of pocket if you work for them for 1 year the forgive 2000 of that. After 1 year of employment with them you have paid 1040 ( 52 weeks times 20 a week). If you left after the 1 year you would still owe 960. If you leave before 1 year you pay the balance of the 4500 minus the 500 and the 20 per week for how ever many weeks you did stay. I currently work for millis and went thru their school. I have zero complaints. I run regional in the Midwest and am home every weekend. Any other questions please feel free to ask or pm me and I can give you my number. I live about 5 minutes from downtown St Louis on the Illinois side.
pokerhound67 and natedawg89 Thank this. -
i went to c1 in indianapolis. cost was $4k if financed, $2k if paid up front (quite awhile ago, im sure numbers have probably changed). i paid up front, so cost of school to me after 1 year of employment at usa truck (or most any other company id chosen) was $800. i was reimbursed $100 per month for private school tuition, fairly standard among the starter companies. so $2000 - 1200 is how i arrive at the $800 cost. but even if id financed $4000, and say it was $4300 after a year of finance charges...total cost after 1 year would be 4300-1200 or $3100. about the same, with no contractual obligation to stay for a year or more at the starter company id chosen.
im back to....private school is the FAR better choice. research and make sure companies hire graduates from the school you choose. but there are private schools out there that will finance the total cost if necessary. this is nearly always a better option than going the company school route.
thank you emt for correcting my error. so mad at myself for believing one person and giving false info as a result. im so stupid sometimes.Elendil Thanks this.
