I got pretty sick 2 years ago and had to stop driving..now after recovering from the treatments I wonder if I'm gonna have to start all over again ? I retired from my first industry and drove for about 4 yrs before I became ill..the company I was driving for sold out to another , my plan was to return there when able..I kept my CDL's and am curious as to how companies are going to look at this...refresher maybe ? if anyone has any input please let me hear it....thanks

More then likely you'll need to take a refresher course unless you go with a small company theyre more lenient.

After 2 years you will be starting as a new driver.

As it should be, and you should be grateful for it.
After that long, and after illness, you really should want the full training.

There's a few companies that will hire you as long as you can pass the DOT physical. You'll go with an experienced driver for a short period of time until the rust is knocked off.
These companies will probably hire you:
Freymiller - "Restore Program" is designed for drivers in your situation.
    Abilene Motor Express
    Magnum Ltd,
    Celadon
    Navajo Express
    Titan Transfer
Don't go by what's on the websites; just apply and you'll probably get job offers from all of them. Submit the online applications, then follow with a phone call and , "I'm checking on my job application."

It's like riding a bicycle. He'll have it back before he gets out of the parking lot.

Unfortunately that's not good enough for most companies.

I've only driven local, straight truck so far. Getting into OTR myself.
I have dealt with bad health problems in the past. If ever mentioned. They seem to be more interested in my being successful in recovery, than the problem. In other words, they're thinking constructively. If they aren't, that's their problem, and you don't want to work for them.
I don't think you're worried about a bit of training time. You're just worried about being welcome. I wouldn't worry if I were you. In my looking. Those who didn't, had their own problem. Don't worry about those.
I have seen the attitude much different in one recruiter, to the next, in the same company.
Yup... sounds about right. You stood a definite chance of them killing you. I refer to a book named: Death by Modern Medicine, by Dr. Carolyn Dean. It tells the truth from the inside.
    Also... look at this thread I put up... To help you in the future. I think you'll like what I refer to;
    On Health... the right way....

you may have kept your CDL, but did you also keep up with your DOT medical card? if not, than most likely, you will have to go to school again, and do everything all over again, which means written tests, permit, and DMV road test.

    good luck to you.
