My company kw 680t with thermo king APU + bunk heat unit draws it’s air from under the bunk. This under the bunk storage area is where I keep all nylon straps and bungees. The air from this area is then heated and blown into the bunk.

The stored straps and bungees have particles of road salt, dust, etc. This makes my eyes burn. This has gone on for 1.5 years. I’ve had the air filter replaced. Still horrible. Only the heat does this, not the AC. I am so sick of it!

Anyone else ever had this issue?. I’m thinking of relocating all the storage items (mostly straps) and just keeping the area sprayed perfectly clean. Ridiculous to not have storage.

i am of the wondering if at one time, there was a separation wall under the bunk, so that you would not have this problem, and still have some storage for your straps and stuff.

are you able to set up a thick piece of cardboard to do this?

I think that idea is worth a try. Make a cardboard barrier and keep the blower side sparkling clean. Worth trying.

Most of the one's I have had used a flexible tube for the return intake air(like a mini dryer vent). They would ziptie it somewhere under the bunk. We could relocate it as needed. Maybe have to have to get some extra filters that the tripac's a/c uses and bungie it to the intake.

if the cardboard collapses too easily, then some thin plywood, cut to shape.

best "free" cardboard to use would be something from say a produce market. those are thick, corrugated, and many times wax lined. keep the wax side out towards the storage area for you stuff, for somewhat better weather protection on those days when you're working in bad weather.

then go plywood later if you have to, the cardboard will act as your template. use simple "L" brackets to hold into place.

one more thought, fully look under your truck for any possible body plugs that may have fallen out, or holes that were drilled and just left unplugged. as the intake fan will suck up from those as well.

On my webasto bunk heater l put a new good size air filter from a bike l had laying around on the inlet. You could also get a blue furnace filter and cut it to fit. That's what l did for the oem bunk heater/ac in my truck because it never anything from the factory.

he can also use a foam filter for a home window a/c unit, and those are washable as well, and will last a long time.

You got to try sleeping with your eyes closed that will stop the irritants from getting in there.

Bunk heaters get gummed up easy when they suck in dirty air. The internal temperature sensor quits working and the unit will start putting out less heat because it thinks it's over heating.

If you wake up one night because it's cold and the bunk heater isn't blowing hot enough that maybe why. They should put an air filter on them.

The AC condenser from the apu is usually under the bunk close to the bunk heater and it has its own air filter. Wouldn't take much to plumb the bunk heater intake into the condenser housing.
