I am trying my best to research all these trucking companies, trying to figure out which one to go with after school.

I've read about a sliding pay scale at US Xpress, which from what I understand pays you less and less cpm the farther you drive on a trip. That seems crazy to me, a big rip off for OTR drivers.

Can anyone explain this to me, why anyone would work on a sliding pay scale???:biggrin_2556:

Because, on a short run, (200 mi) you will pretty much use up the day, so, you get more CPM (cents per mile). A long run (1500 Mi) you get less, because normally you will load and drive a couple days. You have to remember, it takes time to get to the shipper, get checked in, get in a door, get loaded, get on the interstate, get unloaded at consignee etc. Exceptions would be drop/hook. Also, you're dealing with strange cities and not knowing your way around. Factor in rush hour, time constraints etc.

Sliding pay scales are the norm for companies that pay by the mile. As Allow Me noted, the higher pay for short routes is to compensate you for the fixed time you spend getting loaded and unloaded (or doing drop and hooks). Some companies will also give you a fixed amount of money in addition to the short haul miles for a short haul.

IMHO the higher pay rates for short hauls barely cover the added time. I'd much rather have a long haul.

Especially if its forced dispatch and you have to take what they give you.

thanks! With all these different rates of pay it is hard being a newbie...confusing and scary.... makes me feel very vunerable about being used and abused. Guess that's to be expected tho while paying my dues as a rookie.
