Aside from why it is used in employment ads, it is a great selling point for customers.

Looks to me like it is just about like any other discussion on the boards here. Everyone has their own opinions and ideas. Which sort of seems to me what a place like this is all about.

For me, personally, it would depend on how and why a Big truck truckin' company tracks their equipment. I can see benefit to productivity and utilization of valuable time, --- "time is money". However, as has been pointed out already, if it's a ding-bat who doesn't comprehend the mileage scale that differs from map to map doin' the tracking, I'd rather rely on my already existing experience that doesn't seem to fail me.

All the electronic gadgets available, along with computer programs to enhance productivity, depend on electricity to function. Do the Big truck truckin' companies that utilize tracking of some sort have back-up generators in the event of a power failure? Or would they be up Excrement Creek without a paddle without tracking capabilities?
If the ability to trip plan and read maps is absent, would those who depend entirely on electronics to git-er-dun still be able to git-er-dun?
As long as the "basics" are learned there'd be something to fall back on if, for any reason, the electronics weren't functional, even for a few hours. But if the attitude is "I have electronic tracking, so why do I need to know the basics" exists in a Big truck truck driver, I think it's only a matter of time 'till they wouldn't know where/when to think for themselves. To depend entirely on electronics is chancy. Computers are known to crash. It's preferable that Big trucks don't.

Big truck truck driver to dispatcher: "How was I 'sposed to know without GPS to tell me?"
    Dispatcher's reply, "_____________________________, you moron!"

    (Fill in the blank)

Apparently some Big truck truckin' outfits are of the opinion that there are those who find tracking to be an attribute, so they present the ability as an incentive. And/Or, to discourage potential applicants who will gripe about the technology from bothering to apply for a job there. Headache prevention, if you will. Easier than gettin' rid of a headache once it's already there. Could even develop into a full-fledged pain
    in the buttox.

Hammer, Hammer, Hammer, ---- tell me, ---- how do you come up with descriptions like that?
Ya know, ---- you're killin' me here, ............. right? :laughing-guffaw:

Perhaps we were confused with your choice of what could be described as a sensational headline for this thread:
[h=2]Do Folks Want to be Tracked Every Inch They Go?[/h]
It seems to beg the point of view that the thread is going to be about complaining about being tracked "Every Inch [You] Go"...

... or something to that effect.

Then again, this could simply be one of those catchy headlines with fluff content like we see in the news media. "Joan Collins Ate My Baby!!!!" turns out to be about HGH.

    Nevermind, nothing to see here...
