Hi folks,
I am going to get a little DESCRIBITIVE here,so hang on!
I drive for Swift,I know,here we go!
This has got to stop! I am going to start refusing these #### loads,I have to hire "lumpers" to unload frieght that someone else has ordered.I feel this way, I am not a bank,I do not get interest on money I HAVE TO HIRE, These idiots have to start paying thier fare share, I have to pay mine and five others when I pay TAXES because there are so many people out there that insist on living on the TAXPAYERS DOLE, and I am tired of getting ripped off! Yes, they "Reimburse" the money, what the hell do we have to do for the shortages in our paychecks when we have to "wait 'till next week" to get the money back?" Why in hell do we have to wait for anything? It IS NOT FOR THE DRIVER TO HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING to these people,it should be between the shipper and the reciever to take care of this! If there is such a big deal, WHY NOT PUT SOMEONE TO WORK, and we get rid of this hemmoroid!
I know there is a few who want to do thier own stuff themselves, MORE POWER TO YA! Did you ever explore the difference between the amout YOU HAVE TO HIRE TO PAY THESE TAX EVADERS against the amount the company pays you to do it yourself? And the fees they charge you to even HIRE THIS MONEY? What happens if you get hurt using thier manually operated equipment when they use power equipment? Did anyone ever think of this?
I think it's high time we stand against this crap and start refusing to haul thier crap we have to pay anything for! Yeah, I understand that sometimes they "include" these fees in the rates, do you get anything from it? After "hiring" this money? I bet not!
They give you AN "ALLEDGED" tax number, have you ever checked with the IRS to see if they even have that number on file? I bet not, I have not found many that are legit! If they do,then the cohursion laws kick in, they can not have a legit business if it's a class E federal felony to "cohurse any driver" into paying anything out of thier pocket for thier "ALLEDGED" services!
Think about this before anyone comes off with any remarks,I bet you have not checked into it!

What was ridiculous to me was having to pay to get into the loading dock to offload a shipment of onions that we took from California to Boston. I guess it's standard but it just shocked me that we had to pay for them to offload something that they ordered. The broker did cover the fees.
scottied67 Thanks this. -
Although I agree with what your saying, I have NEVER had a lumper fee affect my paycheck. The check is deducted and reimbursed in the next pay period.
So Swift will deduct the money and then reimburse you on the next check? I'd be furious too.scottied67 and daywolf Thank this. -
Sonbell, how much did you have to pay upfront?
Dna Mach; How much did you fall behind on your bills? Because of the deductions? -
When we got to Boston, I believe it was $50 at the gate to get into the loading docks. I figure its what the owner of the property that houses all those docks gets.
daywolf Thanks this. -
i always thought this too, there the ones that order the products, this part too should between the load planners and the guy who order it, we are just drivers, along with we should get some money for going on the toll roads there warehouse sits on, so too me its like at home , i guess well have too pay the postman too bring us our bills or a postal lumper
daywolf Thanks this. -
Daywolf, never. Like I was saying, the next paycheck after turning in the bills would show a deduction for the lumper then the same amount as a reimbursement. So it all evens out.
Give them hell. I can't believe they would deduct the money from your check and THEN reimburse you next week. Thats unacceptable.daywolf and scottied67 Thank this. -
I understand the gripe, but how come Swift pulled it from your check. they never touched mine for lumper fees! is this something new or did you mess up somehow on the paperwork. I always use a comcheck for them.
scottied67 and daywolf Thank this. -
What Swift does is front the money to your comdata card, you write a comcheck for the amount they fronted, then turn in the receipt. I forgot to do the receipt trick once and the lumper fee was taken off my next check. I called it in, and the person I spoke with got all snippy with me.
I'm with you though, I hate being the middle man in this situation. Swift should have a central comdata account that they load up, you call in with your comcheck number and they load it remotely, you write it out and boom no chance no way for it to come out of your paycheck for any mistakes. -
Question 15: May drivers be coerced into employing loading or unloading assistance (lumpers)?
Guidance: No. The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 made it illegal to coerce someone into unwanted loading or unloading and require payment for it (49 U.S.C. 14103, previously 49 U.S.C. 11109). The FHWA is responsible for the enforcement of regulations forbidding coercion in the use of lumperssevenmph, daywolf and scottied67 Thank this.
