Some,,, though not all, of our trailers are HHG marked.
I get a lot of freedom to take backroads.

If you blow by a scale, by accident, pull over. Turn your four ways on, and wait. If they want you, they will come get you. If they haven’t come in fifteen minutes or so, drive on.
There are reasons people miss a scale. It happens. The DOT understands this.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
Ran by one on I80 WB through PA. they had "trucks must enter" signs posted at a rest area and I had an hour of time left to drive an hour & 5 minutes. The first sign they posted was blown over by the wind so I "couldn't read it" unlike the 25 other trucks that were pulling in lol

Years ago, driving south on I 65 around Columbus IN, about 2 AM. Round the curve in the passing lane, and saw the scales were open. Got in the right lane as quick as I could, but missed the entrance. So pulled to the side of the highway by the exit. Lady comes out of the scalehouse, and puts a spotlight on me from the police cruiser parked there.
Grab my paperwork,. and walk up there. She then proceeds to chew me out " Why were you trying to dodge the scales?" I wasn't, I just spaced out, and saw the open sign at the last minute. "So you were trying to dodge the scales?" If I was trying to dodge the scales, why did I stop? She then starts ranting about driving around the scales, 10 points on your license, , yada yada yada..... She gives me a disgusting look, and says "Get outta here!"bigkev1115 Thanks this. -
Years ago I was on US 72 EB around 4am in Iuka, MS. I came up upon the scales, and the electric sign was off, and the green sign said closed, so I went by the scale, and as I passed it, I seen the DOT officer waving his arms telling me to stop. So I pulled over immediately, and I seen him hop in his cruiser and come to me.
I told him that the electric sign was out and the green sign said closed. So he escorted me down the road, turned around, went by the westbound scales, and then back into the eastbound scales. He weighed me and told me to park and come inside. He checked my paperwork and gave me a tactful lecture on how many points and how much MS charge for blowing their scales. Then he asked me "Do you think you can stop at the scales next time?". I said yes sir I ll stop twice. He laughed and said have a good daywore out Thanks this. -
I was in Texas near Odessa on I 20 getting a Level 1 in the weigh station. There was a service road that ran behind the weigh station. Here comes a James R Smith truck coming down the road. The other trooper walked over to the service road, and stopped the driver.
Trooper asked the driver " Driver, what do you think you re doing? then the driver explained. "Let me have your permit book and bills, you re going to go down this road, get to I 20 east, go to next exit, turn around and come in this weigh station. You re getting a Level 1 and a $500 ticket" -
Funny thing, NJ scales are notorious for not being open "at night." Well I blew through there a few days ago around 5:30-6 am (so pre-dawn this time of year) and JUST as I passed the first sign, if flipped to open. HOLY CRAP! So I pull over to the right and tuck in behind another truck. I get to the next sign and it's closed, but I'm right on top of the other truck, so I move back to the center lane and accelerate, and the #### sign flips again!! but now I can't get over because the truck next to me isn't going in. I look in my mirror and a truck 400' behind me isn't going in either, and I figure, "he HAD to see the sign!" So I just went for it. Nobody followed me.
My reasoning is they constantly harp on us about stopping distances, they can't expect me to slow down from 65, change lanes, and merge based on a sign changing when I'm less than 50' from it. -
I did that today in NM and got caught.
I saw the sign that said weigh station, but I didn't see a guard shack. It was just like a dusty road. There was a cop car there which I saw after I passed the exit. I had passed other "weigh stations" with nothing there.
So I stopped on the side of the road close to the cop car.
No citation. But he marked on my examination report that I "failed to obey sign."
In the time I was there, another driver blew past too. Lol and that guy drove across the field to get back on the exit. He got inspected too.
Just us bunch of flunkies out on the roads in NM today raising hell.pete781693, Flat Earth Trucker, snowlauncher and 2 others Thank this. -
