Over at my company, one of our heavy haul guys just got a new KW with a TK APU. It had 30 hours on it and already had to have the main seal replaced.

I will dropping in Topeka tomorrow, then over to the drop yard in KC headed to.Four Oaks NC with a drop on Tues. Just came out yesterday after a few days of chasing drum and bugle corps. Had a blast though. About the photo gig, keep your day job. YOU'LL MAKE MORE, TRUCKING! Been there done that.

Oh and knock on wood. No APU issues in this truck's first year. ZERO, NOT ONE! Perfection!

I must've drawn the short straw then. I've had nothing but constant issues with these units here.

Well on the the newer trucks you won’t have to worry about APU issues, because they won’t be having them on the next batch of trucks. FCC is moving away from APUs. Will this be temporary or permanent? Who knows, they just feel like the upfront cost, and maintaining them just doesn’t make fiscal sense anymore.

Hopefully they won't be going to Opti-idle to save idle time on the emissions engines...a fair percentage of drivers out here have trouble getting a decent nights rest with that kind of system, especially when it's hot and the truck starts itself 10 times an hour.

bzinger, cdavis188 and runningman0661 Thank this.

I don’t think it will be that he opti idle BS. They are testing some alternatives, but they just might let drivers idle. A new APU system now runs North of 14K, they hang one on a truck, and some drivers barely use them, so they never get the ROI.
It’s just something the head of maintenance talked about at the last advisory meeting. We’ll see if it all comes to fruition.

I use mine whenever I can when it's working correctly. Unfortunately when it's 9 million degrees outside like it has been where i run, my APU can't keep up so I've had to idle for a few hours until the sun goes down, then it does okay.

Yup, that's normal for em. Any time it's high 90's-100's if I shut down during the day, I'll have to idle till the sun starts to go down and mine works properly. They just can't keep up with extreme heat, especially in a condo.
