Back when I was hauling fuel 15 years ago if I had climbed the ladder they probably would have locked me out for life. And if I had opened a dome lid they probably would have locked me out of every terminal nationwide permanently.

    Agreed 100%

What you described can only be learned from experience.
My last screw up was at a rack where I stopped a compartment shortly after starting it, realizing the preset was going to over fill it.

After 80 gallons loaded I stopped it ( which was good). Problem was I pressed "clear" and tried to preset the correct amount. This caused the riser to fill in more ethonal than acceptable.

Later on I learned that pressing "clear" was the defining moment. All I had to do was move the riser over and continue loading. When I pressed "clear" it ruined everything.

    Thanks for the reply!

Things happen out here we all make mistakes, but you are severely lacking attention to detail. Check your lift information before + after loading, and before you drop at the store. We're all micromanaged, and everything is documented in fuel. Drive the truck how they want it driven. If you're not sure of something STOP, and check or ask someone. If you're required to watch a video just do it... Don't bring unnecessary attention to yourself.

Thanks so much. It's very true. Got a new offer and hopefully i get cleared for the job. The new plan is to dedicate my full mind to it and treat it as a career as opposed to a regular job. The challenge comes when I start getting comfortable after a while and things become repetitive or routine. That's when the mind starts drifting into other things. Have to cancel that noise out and keep reminding myself how important this job is.

I know it sounds like a troll post but does anyone know what would happen if on the 4th of July. you were working nights and pulled up to the rack and told some other drivers to watch, as you set off a fire work in front of the rack ? I'm thinking minimum would be locked out for life

I have a few while I'm waiting to load now...

    • Ask plenty of questions.
    • Write detailed notes for future reference.
    • Speed comes with time and efficiency.
    • If you're unsure of something STOP and ask someone.
    • Double check your supplier information before loading, and do the same for your store location.
    • Don't be hard on yourself, we all have made mistakes (big or small) doing this, but try your best not to make it a habit.

The last thing I'll leave you with is to enjoy the work. A lot can go into fuel hauling, but once you get the routine, it's a very good line of work to be in.

Make good friends with the gas station workers. Always keep a bong in your side box most of them will come out and smoke some dank with you at night while you drop. Don't use the vapor hose and it'll mask the smell. These guys can make your job easier.

The only ones I’ve done that you listed are the rolling stops in the cell phone.

This that might be it for you for the big companies for now. But in southern California, there should be some Mom and pops that will take you on.

I’m not going to say that fuel hauling isn’t for you, but what I will say is your system is not working. You need to have checks and balances in place to catch yourself when you make mistakes. Basically develop a system to catch the common mistakes that you might have, and religiously stick to that system.

    A few things:

    1. No talking on the load rack. Other drivers might be able to talk to the driver next to them without any issues. You are not that driver. If they try to talk to you just politely say that you need to concentrate.

    2. KNOW YOUR COMPARTMENT SIZES -

make this part of your pretrip

    3. Before you pull onto the load rack and you’re writing up the products and gallons for each compartment, TURN THE WORLD OFF and really focus on what you’re doing and make sure everything fits and you’re loading the right gallons and not going past capacity and so forth

    4. When you’re under the rack double check each compartment before you start the flow.

    5. When you’re at the site, Make sure the address is correct and you’re at the right place. Identify all of the tanks on the ground. Double check everything before breaking each compartment. Keep your phone in the cab. Don’t let customers distract you. Full attention on what you’re doing.

if you have any questions let me know

And another check, at the point of no return, (after you’ve hooked hoses up, and before opening any valves.)
    Right Tank, Right Product.
Should’ve already noted it’d hold it. and so forth.
