Being able to at least meet the posted speed limits and keep up with the flow of traffic. Also, our routes and pay are predetermined. If we drive a certain lane we get paid the same no matter what. The only main incentive is to get there as fast as possible and keep the dockworkers and P&D guys happy. I don't advocate speeding, but it would be nice to get a running start at some of our 6% or 7% inclines before we have to start dropping gears like crazy.

I'm not sure what you mean with the link but if you are implying I have a bad attitude about my job just because of the union you are mistaken. I have a great attitude and generally enjoy my job, I don't have to be a union cheerleader to enjoy working where I do.

    Good pay
    Paid benefits for whole family
    Assigned equipment and nice
Sleep in a hotel not a truck!
Do 3 trips one week, 2 trips the next, if it's busy

    Cons:
Always scared of being laid off
    Being laid off
Waiting by the phone to see if I get to work (I don't have a bid)
    Waiting for a bid

Normally a LTL truck is a day cab with a pup trailer. Hes a p/d driver. Some times you wil use a 40 footer like he does, and at time a 48 r 53... My company only uses a 48 or 53 for a one stop and back. We are in a tight area so it makes sense, although other LTL companies will use them all day

I am a Line-Haul driver for YRC. Been here for a year, last year P/D now im Line-haul

    Pros.
Good miles, normally rack in 350-500 per day
Pull all our own freight, except for super long distance, then it goes on the rail
    Good pay
If on layover you sleep in a hotel and not a truck
Can bid whatever job I choose if I want too
    union (personal choice)
at my yard lots of long turn runs (400 miles+ round trip)

    cons
volvo tractors are gutless except the older units with the detroits
    living by the phone
    work weekends
    shop supervisors are nasty
people dont write up trucks and hence they dont get repaired

    UPDATE:

    Pros:
    1) Steady, not necessarily high, but steady pay (steady pay may be more important than high, but possibly fleeting pay, as i may explain below)
Not much rushing anymore: More laid back pace----which equals slightly lower pay. More rushing would = higher pay. i'll take the lower pay with the lower stress.

    2) Pretty good work environment for the most part. i can't comment on the package side, but UPS freight doesn't not tolerate acting like a horse's butt at work. That gets stomped out REAL quick.

    Cons:

    1. Volvo. (enough said)

    2) Equipment, while well maintained, is not always suited for the job: For example, using a former road tractor is not a good idea for P+D local work. 10 speed transmission really not good for city work. Also, high caster is great and necessary for a road tractor. NOT good for a city tractor.

Back of trucks and trailers could be made easier to climb in and out of. Liftgates, while well maintained and work well, could be also be more user friendly.

    3) If you consider being micro-managed a con, then that's a con. i don't.

    speedyk Thanks this.
