Wow, I'm still trying to grasp this concept but I thank you Scottied and will study this page you wrote.
I'm curious, as you are advocating the change outlined above on split sleeper options, is that in part because you are a split sleeper as well for the reason productivity/efficiency and fatigue safety considerations?
I don't understand this passage in FMCSA

Split sleeper option works well for some, on some days but I prefer a 10 if I have my rathers. I need 8 hours of good sleep. But I also want an hour to unwind and and hour to shower and eat before starting my next 14.
However, in my reefer world, guided heavily by appointment times, some days a split sleeper option makes sense or becomes mandatory.
Neither option is right and neither is wrong. It all depends on the individual and that day's circumstances and/or that driving gig's typical circumstances.El Paso Bob Thanks this. -
Dear SuperSnack, That is very interesting. Is there a potential for a DOT officer not understanding that, or do the numbers just add up and you're safe?
-
I've gone over the website and heard of this before and I'M IN! Thank you Scottied67.scottied67 Thanks this.

You're not the only one that has a hard time understanding the split sleeper heck even the DOT isn't on the same page. Its best to take a full 10 hr brake so its more simplified.
-
Besides extending your driving/working day; the split works in your favor on the way home, you need to take the 8, finish your time to get home and then go off duty, the remaining 2 hours can be the first part of off duty time after you get to the terminal and leave to go home.
The most important thing is [for now] that the first break has to be 8.....
5 and 5 would be helpful for sleeper teams as they can remain in synch for days, something the 8 and 2 rule screwed up. -
NO it does not. The split may begin with either the 2 hour portion first or the 8 hour portion first.El Paso Bob, tinytim and not4hire Thank this.

Just make sure you do not exceed the 11 hours driving or 14 hours on duty with a full 10 hour break, 8 + 2. It can help you with delivering odd hours and such, but also can trip you up if not careful.
El Paso Bob Thanks this. -
Taking the 2 hrs first can be a godsend when waiting for an appointment, or when you stop for dinner and wait for rush hour traffic to die down. Or a nap from 2 to 5 AM for the night owls.
The 8 hr sleeper portion can be helpful because I can't sleep more than a few hours during the day, and having to sit for 10 just kills me.El Paso Bob Thanks this. -
It's all legal, and most DOT won't bat an eye at it, especially on e-log. Most see the sticker on my door and ignore me as I pass them by.El Paso Bob Thanks this.
