One thing I have to nip in the butt...

You'll probably notice that I really like working for Magnum. If you search through my posts, you'll find that I've posted in other places about looking for a new driving job. So let me explain. I don't want anyone thinking I'm yanking their chain when I talk about how much I like working for Magnum. Plus, who knows who is reading my posts on here. :p

I'm married and my wife lives in the Philippines. We are currently waiting approval for her visa so she can come here.

Obviously when she gets here I can't be on the road for months on end and leave her at home. So my situation is going to change when she gets here. She has expressed interest in living in the truck with me, at least temporarily to see what it's like. She knows I've found a job I really like and is willing to work with me. So I'm forced with an inevitable decision of how to proceed forward in the future. I've considered many options:
    • Stay over the road and bring her with me
    • Keep doing what I'm doing, but go home more often
    • Move to Minneapolis or Fargo, where it's more convenient
    • Move to an area I frequent while driving with Magnum (ex Chicago outskirts area) close to the freeway so it's easy for me to stop
    • Get a local job with another company so I can be home daily, or every few days or weekly
    • Move to Fargo and maybe work in another division with Magnum
    • Maybe do something entirely different from trucking
You'll notice most of those options involve finding a way to stay with Magnum. That is what I want to do. I do not want to leave this company. But I have to be realistic about the idea that it's possible I'll have to do something else. It's one thing to be married. But my wife is coming to a new country for the first time and I don't want to leave her home alone for weeks on end. Especially since she won't be able to drive. She will depend on me for everything, at least for a while. I have to be very sensitive to that.

That all being said, yes I'm looking at my options so I'm ready when the time comes to make that decision. I don't anticipate having to make the decision for a few months. I'm looking for a good fit now so I have a plan, but I hope I don't have to come to that. Maybe she'll like being on the road with me. Maybe Magnum doesn't have a place for me outside of OTR. I still have people to talk to and research to do.

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that I'm still very happy at Magnum and I intend to make it work here. But I'm still preparing for any hard decisions I have to make. I don't want anyone seeing posts from me and getting the wrong idea.

Bottom line: I want to find a way to stay at Magnum, but I have to be prepared either way. I still have months before anything will change.

    Thank you

    Carry on. :)

I'd go with Coon Rapids area over Chicago. You'll be by the house with time to stop at least every other week, plus it's a nicer town. Don't know how large the Phillipino ex-pat community is in the Twin Cities, but it's got to be larger than Fargo.

btw, check with management, maybe there's some work she can do.

Picked up a Gaylord load yesterday morning going to Indy and Shelbyville, IN.
I drove out my hrs yesterday and stayed in Bloomington IL. Had 4 minutes left on the drive and 70 clock.
Work up super early.... or was that late at night.... to finish my drive into Indy... when I got some hrs back.
Was in and out of Sysco in 1hr and 12 minutes... gate to gate. I then drove down to Kroger in Shelbyville, IN and was in and out in 1hr 35min. And that was with waiting 45 minutes or so in the bullpen waiting for a door assignment...

Haven't earned any steak money in a while lol

Drove up to Goshen, IN for a load going to Fargo ND.
Then it's looking like Grand Forks ND to NC....and some time at home with the bride....

My wife is also Filipina and we have 3 kids. She got her drivers license a month before I started my driving career. I have no real advice for you but wanted you to know it can work no matter what you choose.
I try to stay out 2-3 weeks and home for 5-10 days. 1 income household. Been married 11 years and OTR for over 5years.
If I was in your shoes I wouldn't try to change anything to much before she gets here. When she does get here I would bring her with you because she's going to need you and she's going to be homesick.
After her learning how to drive and being more comfortable then you could make better choices.
If that doesn't sound good the other option would be a job where you can be at home every day at least until she can drive and be comfortable.

Zata you could move to Dallas and literally have her show you around. We've got the third largest Filipino population after So Cal and Florida. I know a girl from Iloilo City and she's been here twice. She felt right at home. What does she think about cold weather? Most Filipinos don't even own anything thicker than a rain coat.

Also trucking jobs are plentiful in DFW. Pick your poison....all kinds of jobs available and no state income tax.
