So with all this talk about pay, what is a reasonable or realistic goal for miles? I understand starting out isnt the same as being experienced far as finding your groove, but what would be a good goal to have? Is 2500 miles a week wishful thinking? What about 3000? Just curious on what would be realistic goals for someone who wants to stay out 25 days.

I got my plane tickets today and a new trainer who is staying out for the holidays. Also, maybe laughable, but I picked up a toy semi truck to see how a trailer tracks in situations. Picked the idea up from a youtube video, mostly was talking about backing doubles but figured couldnt hurt...

@Ray Strack I typically stay out 25 days then take the rest of the month off and I expect 10.5 to 11k/mo. As I stated in my previous post, my last two months weren't good and I averaged only 9800/mo. There are several who work much harder than I do and they seem to routinely hit 12 to 13k or more.

9500-11500 average. Some months you could get 8000, some months you could get 13,000. But your average should be within 9500-11500.

I always shoot for the top (11500 monthly average). That's about 2875 per week. Some weeks I get over 3500. Other weeks I get 2000. But your pay is based on averages.

I would recommend when you get in your truck to go hard for 1-3 months to see what you've got. Then determine if you can keep up that pace, determine your average and dial back as you see necessary.

@Ray Strack im really struggling with the general idea of "drive x amount of days for the month and take y amount of days off"

I'm not trying to bash this idea. I think a lot of people go about it this way. But let me try to explain why this concept stresses me out...

If you limit yourself to driving x amount of days, then really your goal is to just drive as many miles as you can every day for those x amount of days. If that is the case, then every day you don't maximize your driving it feels like you're falling behind. Every breakdown, every load that doesn't average over 400 miles a day is going to piss me off under this concept. I would be stressed! Because if those 5 days off every month are what I'm looking forward to, then every setback on the way there is limiting my potential and I personally see myself having a negative mindset if I follow this concept. Maybe you'd be different, but this is my take on it.

Here is how I would go about scheduling Hometime so I make as much money as I want, but still get decent Hometime...

I'm a go-getter, so I want the .50 cents per mile. I know I need to average 11,500 miles per month at Magnum to get .50 cents per mile. If I average 11,500 miles at .50 per mile, I'll make $5750 a month, or $69,000 per year. Obviously, you can use your own numbers for goals when you learn how Magnums pay scale works.

11,500 miles x 4 months in the trimester = 46,000 miles I need to drive during every 4 month period. I can split that up however I want, I just need to reach 46,000 miles and I'll be making .50 cents per mile. This is where Magnums flexible home time policy comes into play.

4 months in the trimester x 30 days per month = 120 days. I have 120 days to reach 46,000 miles.

46,000 divided by 120 is 383 miles per day I need to average. This is very possible!

So, after the first day of the trimester, as long as I drive more than 383 miles then I know I'm on pace for my .50 cents per mile goal. After day 2, I should have 766 miles... and so on...

Eventually I'll get "ahead of schedule". For example, let's say I'm averaging 415 miles a day for 21 days. I have 8715 miles in the books. However, I have budgeted 383 miles per day, so after 21 days as long as I have 8043 miles then I'm on schedule. But since I'm at 8715, that's 672 miles above what I need. I know one day is "worth" 383 miles based on my budget. So I know I can take maybe 2 days off and still be on par to make what I want. Sometimes at this point, I'm WAY ahead of where I need to be, so I can take more days off. Sometimes I'm behind, so I know I have to work a little harder. But at least this way I always know exactly where I'm at, and how home time will affect my pay. Also, breakdowns and "low mile loads" don't upset me because I know exactly where I'm at.

I hope this makes sense. I hope you can use this to "game the system" to work in your favor.

Edit: dumb of me to leave out that mpg and safety also plays a factor. Stay on highways as much as possible, follow the laws, don't hit people and the rest falls into place. :p
