My husband and I will be completing school very soon, and were told by our instructer that he had a company willing to hire us immediately. The catch is this company wants us on only if we do a lease option with the their truck. I have read so much about how bad it is for a new student to do this and to absolutely run the other way. What I want to know is, will it make a difference in the lease option success being that we will be team driving versus a single driver? I don't want to ruin our careers before we're even out of the gate, but it's looking like this is our only option. I am trying to make an educated decision, but I have found no info on new student team drivers in a lease purchase scenario. Any advice appreciated.

My husband and I are team lease operators for Transam Trucking and have been for over 2 years. In my opinion, your chances for success are greater as a team than say a solo driver. The variables that are stacked against a solo driver does not effect team so much. You don't have to worry about stopping the truck for 10 breaks. You can drop loads and keep going. However, my concern would be the truck itself. How old is it? Any warranty on truck? Why is this you guys only option? What are the terms of the lease?

Don't jump in too quickly. Truck companies love teams, especially husb/wife. Make sure you really like trucking before you commit to leasing/buying.

we are told a late model 2007, but have not been given specifics other than the company name, and that the truck would be a condo cab. The reason for options is that due to extreme extenuating circumstances, we will have our son with us, no choice on that. That's why its a lease agreement with this company, and we will each have a training period (obviously) to achieve before we are to go on our own as a team.

Well before you jump into a lease, please read this thread and many other threads on this forum before you sign the dotted line >> Want to avoid getting burned by a lease-purchase agreement?

Also, take in consideration. Many companies have a age requirement to have children on board. Just because you lease a truck, does not give you the full option to do what you want to do.

I understand. The company is aware of our son's age, and it is within their policy. Thank you for the link, I will be looking at that info now. :biggrin_25525:

It sounds like you are saying that you are limited on options because you have to bring your son with you. Wow, that sounds like a challenge in itself. More than likely, you will not know the terms of the lease agreement until you are ready to sign, and if that is the case it will be difficult for you to make an informed decision. If the company has the miles to run and if the truck does not have major repairs then you should be able to forage a living. We do it everyday....:biggrin_255:

you have it exactly right. Because of him we are limited. I have done some research on the company, and that in itself scares me, however like I said, all bad things I have read have had to do specifically with single drivers as opposed to teams. Seeing as how we would be together, home time becomes almost a non issue. I'm looking into home schooling my son as it is anyway (we are unhappy with the school system he is in as it is) so that is also a non issue. I am enrolled in college, but, again, my classes are all online. I don't have dreams of getting rich, we simply want to earn a living, be together as a family, and be able to get by. I want to inquire about the company as well to see if I get any positive feedback about that as well, but I'm not sure if I can post their name here or not.

You are going to force a child to live in a moving truck 24/7? That doesn't sound like a good environment for a kid. How old is the kid? What about having friends and school activities and all the things kids like to do. As team drivers your truck will always be moving. Maybe you should think about the child living with a relative or something.
