Does anyone else see this "call ahead" crap to any great extent? Or is it just here at MY company?:biggrin_2552:

I see that on the bol all the time. I never called and ask my company about it once. They said the carrier calls, not the driver. Of course i wonder how the know to call if the bol is in my hand for the whole trip? Logistics, customer service representative, etc etc , above my pay grade, I'm just a driver :p

An hour before what? Before you get up? Before you go to bed? Before you eat? Before you leave? Before you get there? Before you get here?:biggrin_25526:

Kind of impolite to just drop in, without calling first!:D
The only times I ever ran into this was on residential deliveries that were way out of our normal routes. Then, it just made sense. But really, I don't think I'm too surprised at anything that a salesman, dispatcher or company boss will expect a driver to do.

I'm sorry. I should have been more clear. ;)

That's a phenomenon in the LTL world which basically consists of companies bending over backwards at a driver's expense to cater to the internet shoppers of the world who often give absolutely no thought to the accessibility of their locale to the truck who might be bringing their crap.

I don't mind when a phone # is provided on the BOL...in case it is some obscure business or Joe Schmoe's house in BFE. What does annoy me is getting a flaky consignee who is seldom available to receive or even worse a 3PL pickup that is in a strange location with no phone #.
I also see "call ahead 24 hours before delivery" printed sometimes which is not even possible at my company.

    Dominick253 Thanks this.

I have delivered to some customers who assume I have traveled across the nation just to bring them their goods, usually consisting of 1 or 2 pallets.

Gearjammin' Penguin and Big Don Thank this.

I get asked that all the time.

"Did you come all the way from .......?"

"No, I only came from Baltimore. "

I love it when on the rare occasions that I actually do call one of these entitled yahoos they don't bother to answer the phone. I call once more, and if they don't answer the second time, they'll find their freight sitting in front of the garage when they get home.

Oh God.. Don't even get me started on the topic "sure your truck will fit". It is the most used lie I hear.

As for the OP, some places run their warehouse out of a storage unit and you have to call an hour ahead. It absolutely helps to have a good rapport with the customer (never lie or conceal damage). I've gotten two of my customers to trust me with their combo. That makes a huge difference.
