Cons they are heavier, con or pro depending on your view, they haul heavier loads. I really don't want much to do with hauling heavy loads, oversize, yes, overweight no, so for me they are all cons
When hauling multi piece loads for the USA the triple axle makes little sense over a spread axle. The spread is allowed 40k and the triple is allowed 43.5k(depending on axle spacing) according to bridge law. Extended bridge law (over 80k) is not available in all states.
If you're after a low profile, 36" deck, you're probably on 17.5 tires like me. So you get the height advantage. The tires are difficult to source and many tire guys just won't deal with them. Weight wise - what @beastr123 said. You'll find niche stuff with it. And it changes like everything else. Wanna buy a flat extendable? I bought that for a reason a while back, then things changed. I'm EXACTLY in your mindset - I have the 3 axle extendable step, but don't have a lift on the rear axle - it's a PITA to drag around, and I'm never over 75k on weight - 3 axle tractor, I'm not set up to haul heavy.
pro, brokers give you a couple extra pennies for overweight load. Con, your extra costs will be more than those extra pennies.
True - if you're a painted box of rocks. If you ask these questions before contemplating a purchase of equipment, then you'll have a better perspective. So, fella - have you ran a Tri axle step in any formation and have an informed market opinion, or just throwing that in the can for flushing?
Have I personally ran tri Axle, no. My carrier has in past and stopped, same with rgn. I inquired about getting into more specialized they went through information with me and why they've moved away. From everything I've seen and experienced all of open deck has gone to crap and more specialized is no different. The demand is just not there to push rates up and make it worthwhile, plus there's more dummies out here running illegal now. That's not to say it's impossible to make money, if you got the hook up and good customers locked down sure anything is possible.
so your answer is to haul what 99.8% of all 5 axle set ups can haul? way to leverage your skill set and pricing power, that is a genius strategy - if only every one could do the same ….
There is no money in hauling big over weight loads. Everyone should pull dry van. That’s where the money is at.
