Oh is that what those bars are for?!? You are talking about those long bars that hang about two inches off of the ground and are suspended by a chain on each side? I always wondered what they did but always forgot to ask when I got home.

    Learned something new today.

    Hello gents,

I kinda wanted to check in. Usually I am very active on here but the past two months have been anything but normal. Been dealing with the collapse of my company, which now feels like a distant past. It did trigger a massive depression for a few weeks but I also managed to pull myself together. I quit drinking and despite my doctor's order not to do it cold turkey, I went ahead and did it anyway. It proved to be nearly fatal for me. But I have more luck than common sense, so here I still am.

I received a call from my old Holland colleague and he talked me into working with him driving a cement truck. It was either that or work at a tire plant. To my shock, the job isn't bad at all. It's actually fairly laid back and I make almost as much as with Holland, albeit the benefits aren't nearly as good. Super small company ...how small? Despite two locations, my employee number is 65. The guy training me is #2. Boss is super nice and caters lunch every two weeks. I am in the deep South so they promised me year around employment with a guaranteed 40 hour paid work week, even if the rain shuts everything down several days.

Best part is, I am on a list to take over a Class A position when the next guy quits or retires. I was also told that my front end loader experience is giving me a leg up on everyone else to eventually help run the plant, a prerequisite to becoming plant manager. That process would take two or three years. Right now I am just happy I found something that is giving me a sense of normality and a much needed break from the hectic LTL lifestyle. Life is looking up.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Thanks for everyone's support. I hope all my other former colleagues landed on their feet.

Careful with using muriatic acid to clean off the dried cement. The wind blows the wrong way and it can knock you clean out.
My dump truck /cement truck instructor also told me that if you have a steer go flat while using that back axle, you need to step on the gas and throw the switch, otherwise that back axle will drive the front end into the ground.

I just got back after a 3-day suspension.

they had to do an “investigation”. I was loading a trailer, and this guy walks backwards looking at his iPad into my forklift I touch him going 1mph and he falls to the ground.

dude is so fat me and another guy couldn’t get him up so I had to pick up him with the forklift.

cooper has subpar maintenance on their pups. Also doesn’t help Linehaul drivers don’t write anything up. You won’t believe how many times I’ve seen Linehaul guys drop trailers with no clearance lights.

cooper likes to run lean and some terminals don’t have outbound dock workers. It’s usually P+D guys or supervisors, and there’s no accountability for things like trash below the apron.

I enjoyed the mixer gig up here in the far PNW. There were weather days with no pay but I usually wanted the time off after the crazy summers. My coworkers were pretty cool, company was mellow, and the finishers were a laugh a minute. Bunch of crazy, damaged guys and gals...
pump jobs all week? Well, okay!
    The 87 Mack I started with however-Ouch!

A lot of guys get on a mixer when their usual work is slow and then wind up just staying on mixers. A couple of guys I know made a good career that way. Teamster retirement etc.etc.
I tried it for awhile, just to help out a friend of mine. The only thing I didn't like was carrying chute extensions.
Oh, and fence post jobs back in those old days before automatics. Hated those. Pump jobs were like being on vacation compared to filling 400 fence post holes.

Made a delivery to an automatic touchless truck wash today. Pretty cool, did not know they even existed. Guy was telling me they can wash up to a 96’ tractor/trailer combo. Told him if my name was on the side of the door I’d run it through.
