Yeah. That is the only leverage I have against a customer that refuses to get me unloaded in a timely manner.

"Hey, my dispatcher is hounding me about getting to my next appointment. I really want to get you your items today cause our redelivery charges are about $100. I really don't want you to get nailed with that bill".

That is one I will have to remember. Besides just leaving, with the full backing of my dispatcher, after I blow at least 15 minutes waiting (per company policy).

We got the same company policy. 15 min per delivery. Then call in. Lately they let stuff slide so we don't lose people's business. My idiot dispatcher does this at my expense.

We are required to keep a 4 delivery/hour pace. If one customer holds me up for half an hour, I still have 3 more deliveries to make within that 60 minute window.

Some delivery clusters are door to door from each other. No problem making it up... Others it is a 15 min drive each way.

Man that is one thing that I NEVER had to live with. The deliveries took as long as they took. But you'd better be able to explain WHY they took so long.
The only time I really felt like my boss was being a jerk, was doing afternoon picks from a shop of our best customer. I really couldn't blame him too much, as it was a terribly tight schedule to get back to the dock for the line haul going in the direction this freight had to go. OTOH, there wasn't a dam thing I could do about it, if the load wasn't ready.

Upside, is that IF I can justify it. I don't have to wait past that time. But I need to call in to let them know, after 15 minutes. Then my boss calls and tries to raise holy Hades. Which only serves to piss off the dock people, who then make it take longer. But that's OK, I'm then given permission to leave. And not go back, until the next day.

If things are that tight, then you have to load what's ready and leave, assuming it's multiple bills that is.

We have the same policy. 15 minutes unless it's one of our bread and butter accounts. Thanks they'll bump it to 30 or 45 depending on load severity and the rest of the trailer.
Like today got the pleasure of sort and seg 15 skids at a PFG. Took 1.5 hrs thanks to a slow lumper who had to label as I broke it down.

I don't mind waiting 20+ minutes on a customer. Forklifts break down, people call in sick, and you got a long line of LTL trucks ahead of you. It is operational lag.

What pisses me off is when they pull the bullspit card of:. My boss is mad at me and I gotta finish typing up this email. Or I am getting ready to send my guys to lunch, mind waiting 45 minutes?

I actually did that today. Had a delivery at a restaurant where they grow their own beef. They had no dock, no fork lift and didn't even have a bobcat on this side of the 1100 acre farm. So as they were trying to figure out what they were going to do with a 515 pound ice machine sitting on the rear end of my trailer.... I wen't across the street to the hardware store and explained how they didn't want to pay any accessorial charges and I really didn't feel like coming back and he came across a 2 lane road and offloaded it before they came back out.

Funny thing was he told me as he was headed back to his place "if you come back here just come get me, they are cheap and won't pay crap!" lol was my first stop of the day before my PFG, had a good laugh. He understood the headache as he deals with ltl for his replacement parts for his equipment.
