I did sleeper teams... out 5-6 days then home 2. Was my first driving job, did that for 8 months then went on the extra board. I liked it a lot at first and got to see a lot the country out west. I’m glad I got that experience of driving thru Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Oregon. My son was a newborn at the time so he didn’t know what was going on. But now, there’s no way I could be gone like that. I sometimes feel bad for the guys who go right into a LTL job in the Midwest because they will never get the experience of pulling those gears thru the mountains and all the scenic views. All they will get is boring flatland. I feel for your urge to go OTR @misterG I do still get the itch.

OTR just doesn't pay well.
I dont see my generation of people ever considering it other than those who have nowhere else to turn.
How am I going to be away from home 7+ days at a time for 2-2.5 days off for 700-1200 a week. You might as well work two full time jobs that pay 12 bucks an hour. At least this way you're not pissing in bottles, can hug your kids/family, and eat a nice home cooked meal.
Even if you make good money how are you going to enjoy life not being with your family. That being said, I understand at the end of the day you gotta do what you gotta do to put food on the table.Gearjammin' Penguin, Mike2633, EuropeanTrucker and 3 others Thank this. -
I would probably go work on an oil rig in Texas before I ever did OTR(swift, schnider, etc) for my main source of income.

I was thinking about waiting for another couple years. When both my kids are out of school. I'll still only be 47 then, and plenty young enough to enjoy it. My wife is an (RN) school nurse, so the income is nice but not seriously needed. SOME, fluctuation can be handled.
Mike2633 and road_runner Thank this. -
I found this really good company hauling container units. The pay is almost double than that I am making now. It's been 3 weeks going into 4 weeks since I filed my application. I already met the TM and he seemed friendly and interested in hiring me, but he can't do anything unless their HR finishes my application.
I check back weekly and they keep telling me they are still working on it. Is this normal for the application process to take so long? I am starting to get nervous. -
But I'd be walking, and talking to other companies already. Don't let them hold you up, you may just find that Unicorn job by not waiting to talk to others as well.Cardfan89 and road_runner Thank this. -
