I went to a local school and payed for it myself to avoid signing contracts. I get a job offer from a company but they want me to sign a one year contract and if I don't fufill it I have to pay them $1000. I have no problem staying a year but if I get into a company and my check is always short or some other problem I'd like the option to leave a bad situation.

Is there a question in there? Or just a statement stating you found a crappy company?

Just remember you don't have to sign anything or work where you don't want to . There are hundreds of companies that take new drivers .

I was in a similar situation when I first started , a company called "Windy Hill" had that same type of contract making you pay for diesel and training if you left before 1 year

    Run away.

Signing that is akin to being a slave. Why take away your free will?

The first I would do is ask them to email you a copy of what they want you to sign. If they refuse to send it, or you don't like the terms, tell them thanks, but no thanks and move on. I am not sure why folks don't ask for a copy ahead of time.

I wouldn't sign any contract to drive for a company.
I'd read it, but I'd also have them insert that you want "xxxx" number of miles per week, otherwise they owe you $1000...or whatever amount is good for you.

me thinks we aren't hearing the whole story...the contract is probably tied to a sign on bonus...just a guess

can't figure out why anybody would pay to go to work for somebody in this market

As entry level I can't think of any places that offer a "sign on" bonus.
