Since I am paid by the mile, I take advantage of every mile I can turn, especially when the truck is spec'd to pull at a certain speed. I turned fewer 700+ mile days when SPD turned their trucks down from 70 to 68, I actually saw a small drop in mpg as well because it dropped my truck down closer to the low end of it's power band.

Back in my Crete days when they turned our trucks down to 62 after that bad wreck that killed those kids, my mpg went down dramatically because at 65 it was already at the low end of the power. 62 made me drop a gear almost immediately when climbing a hill.

my truck must be different then. It gets a lot better fuel mileage at 63 vs 70. The motor spins a bit over 1400 rpm at 70. I can run 3000 miles a week at 65 just as well as 70

there's also the whole thing that there's so much bs on the road these days between governed trucks and 4 wheelers. You wouldn't believe how much less stressful going at a slower speed is. For me that alone is worth going slower for, even without the mpg aspect. Even dropping from 68 to 65 in my company truck did wonders for my stress levels. I couldn't care less if everyone and their mother passed me

Yea. Lol. I know of a place that pays 1840 a week salary looking for a driver too, full benefits also. But its also not close to you and its only 4 days a week. Running a route with an electric pallet jack. 5 stops i think. Out 2 nights a week.

The difference in how many hours you use to run 3000 miles between 65 and 70 is the difference. And it's more than 5 more miles per hour because at 65 I lose more speed on hills than I do at 70. When Crete turned their trucks down to 62 years ago, I was more stressed then than I have been in recent years. At least at 68 or 70 I can get around the average Swift, CRE or Prime much sooner, and get out of their range of influence. I wish our trucks had that Pass-smart option so I could get by them and away from them even faster.

I am chomping at the bit to move to Brakebush when they have an opening. They're a small carrier that takes care of their drivers so they have very little turnover. Mostly from retirement or a driver who leaves for a medical issue, very few leave because they are unhappy.

It’s a catch 22. Working for a mega for mileage pay and maxing out your hours every week doesn’t leave much more juice to squeeze. If everyone sits up against the governor all day it stands to reason the same would happen if the limit was raised since everyone is chasing miles.

When I drove at the flatbed company I worked for the trucks were set at 67 on the foot and 65 on the cruise when I started back in 2004. As states began to raise the speed limits the owner decided to bump the trucks up a little, 73 on the foot and 70 on cruise. After a while the guys who sat on the governor all day saw their trucks go to 70 and 70 while the rest of us stayed at 73/70.

The current company I drive for runs about 50 trucks and is governed, I’ve heard 75 but I don’t see any reason to run that fast with a tanker. And I’ve heard of a couple guys just since I’ve been here that have gotten their trucks cut back for running that fast on roads they shouldn’t be.

My advice going from a mega to a 100 truck carrier would be to just blend in. See how everyone runs, what kind of mpg’s they get, and try not to stick out.

And also to be treated like a professional again instead of a trained monkey would be a welcome change
