Unions protect the good worker, who shows up every day, and does a good job. They also protect the worthless worker, who misses a few days a month, stretches out breaks, slacks off, and generally should be fired.

And I do believe this was the source of my oil leak (some of that oil came out of the cooler itself when I finally got it to release)

Without a doubt one of the more challenging disassembly jobs I have done mainly because the engine sits so far back in the engine bay you almost need one of those over the engine creepers. Even though it's a V6 in a bay built for a V8 hemi, you can't get inside the engine bay to work because it has all the high dollar a/c, coolant lines and evap plumbing all around the motor.

I couldn't agree more except for the time off comment. If people have earned their time off, it's their right to take it. I just spoke to a friend of mine who had his 19th anniversary today working at my old company which gave him more vacation time. Between his vacation, sick, floating holidays and his 8 hours of paid volunteer time, he has a total of 66 days of 8 hours of pay that he can take off whenever he wants.

As for the people that should be fired, we have had a few. Mostly for theft of time. 2 tanker drivers caught in the yard sleeping in the truck. 1 tanker driver for sleeping in his truck in a refinery. 1 tanker driver who for the second time forgot his license. The first was arriving at a refinery without it. I called in and said he felt sick and was going home. They confirmed with the guard that he just didn't have his license. The second and final time he was going to the same refinery and forgot it again. So he drove the tanker about 45 minutes the opposite way to his house to get it and come back. Theft of time and unauthorized use of a company vehicle. 1 van driver and 1 forklift operator caught on the camera loading new pallets into a partially loaded trailer. They followed the GPS to a pallet yard where they bought pallets. Did a sting operation and caught him dead to rights. Another van driver would take 12 hours to drive from Los Angeles to San Diego. Did the same thing to him. Found he was stopping at some girls house for a few hours.

To me, this is just felony stupid! How do you give up a 6 figure and home every afternoon career? And to think that they could get away with it.

Earned time off is one thing. Calling in, without any available time to use, is another.

One place I worked, people with little available earned time, would call in sick, because of a hangover from the night before. They would get taken up to a written warning. Then their kids would be sick, or similar, and they needed time off. They would get fired, for missing too many days, and then complain about being fired for taking their kids to the doctor. Forgetting all about the 5 times in 6 months they called in, for a hangover. Those people should be fired, but the union went to bat for them.
