I'm thinking that everyone missed the point of this post. The scammer bought a boot for about $80 on Amazon (yes they are that cheap) and spent another $20 on a pair of magnetic signs. With the bogus phone number on the signs and his stickers he is trying to look official. He has no authority at all. Just out there collecting money. And people are falling for it.

Eventually he's going to mess with the wrong person and get "dealt with." And I won't feel sorry for him.

If you are going through the motions of being a “towing company” without credentials and/or proper licensing, you go to any vehicle and boot it with intent of charging and without permission of the owners of the property and boot the vehicle to hold it hostage, it is criminal possession of property with intent to commit fraud, this is a crime.

if the owner or the manager of the property calls because you are improperly parked, the towing company has to be bonafide, can’t be one off the street or just a freind of a freind thing, that steps back into criminal possession and fraud.

It does not matter if it is posted no parking or not, if you get permission to park there it is legal, you get a name and note the time and place you got permission, verbal permission is as good as a written in many states. michigan is one where verbal contracts stand.

cops using the excuse that they can’t do anything about it because it is civil, are very wrong. This is where you call the state police and have them resolve the matter.

for the record, I had this happen a few times.

Up here the New Canadians park anywhere including stopping in a centre live lane to walk into a donut shop…then piss and moan when cop gives them ticket/s. I know one got tuned to $1200 cuz of violations that included having right side wheels on a sidewalk

    $300 to remove the boot?

    OR

Since it's parked at a walmart

Add the price of a good metal cutting blade and it's a bargain...plus you recoup some of the cost when you scrap the boot at the scrap yard.

Yes - thank you. It's a good public information post that turned into 4 pages of debate.

My advice to anyone new to this industry - READ EVERY SIGN, and PLAN YOUR PARKING.

On the odd occasion I have parked in an unfamiliar place, I do the following -

    1. Look for 'No Parking Signs' - I mean, get out and LOOK, go for a walk. If it is posted - leave.
    2. If I'm unsure, go inside the business, if there is one - and ask permission. Take note of name and time.
    3. "Ask a friend" - if there's a trucker next to you, ask. Even better if they're familiar with the area, or a local.
    4. Check on Truckers Path for info, last resort.
    5. Take care of business - 10 hr break, whatever - and leave. Don't leave trash, and pick up some of others trash and dispose of too.

Some of the 'truck parking' spaces at Walmarts I've seen are designated for RV only. Don't assume.

Realize this varies WILDLY across the country - our closest Walmart has 10 spaces that are frequently used for trucks. In MN - the same. But go to Chicago area and just 'assume' - and see what happens.

    Closest hypothetical analogy/question -

"My neighbor who I don't know at all - has 3 trucks parked on his property. He has a small faded 'No Trespassing' sign in his driveway, but the sign has been there for years. He owns a local business, and I shop there every now and again.

I decide to park my truck on his property next to the other trucks, and when I return the next day - he has concrete blocks placed front and rear so I am trapped in.

I ask him to remove them, so I can leave - but he says he doesn't know who put them there. Suddenly a guy shows up with some slap on magnet stickers on the back of his pick up truck, claiming to be Jasper County Parking enforcement - and wants $700 to remove the concrete blocks"

Who is in the wrong - and what do I do?
