I paid a few grand, but in the past years I see it has more than doubled in price. I feel bad for those that have to come up with $7000

Many folks coming into this have very little idea about it.... It's a HUGE change in life and not all are prepared for that.... the sacrifices, the solitude, the regulations, the low pay and other hardships in trucking is what makes people give up...Last edited: Apr 26, 2019

When I started trucking I had saved enough money to survive for a year even if my pay were not great.... Someone told me to stick with it for at least 6 months... even if I didn't like it... to get a real feeling... A friend of mine who were in CDL with me went to the company that I went... I joined the company after her and so, I knew the company didn't pay very much... it was a mega.. But I decided to go to that company for a number of reasons. And it worked very well for me... I was there for 5 years and made good enough money... But I saved also... living in the truck, cooking in the truck and being the austere and frugal person that I am....

It was $6500 for me and I had to sell the locomotive to pay for it.
There is a 16 hp briggs and stratton engine in the cab attached to a hydraulic pump. Where the N is of the lettering is a 6 gallon hydraullic tank. Yes, the belly tank is used for fuel.
The rail road that it is pictured at was owned by one John Brace (deceased- God rest his soul). John wanted to do a tug test. My locomotive at 400# and 6 inch drivers against his locomotive at 600# with 4 inch wheels. We hook up coupler. He tells me to resist his movement with my locomotive. So that is what I did. He throttled up and I remained on idle. He launched his locomtive and I held my ground. He raced his engine still trying to move my locomotive. Still nothing happened. Getting tired of this I inched the locomotive forward dragging him backward (still on idle mind you). Moved him about 10 feet of which John still racing his locomotive yelled out "Wait a minute wait a minute". John didnt talk to me the rest of the day.
John is a perfectionist and you couldnt tell him if he got some thing wrong. To his dying day, everyone loved the story of how I won the tug test. Of which John couldnt remember the tug test at all, as the numbers didnt work for him.
I will miss John. He was a wonderful friend. Willing to have talks on all levels, he didnt put anyone down for not knowing. If you were willing to learn, he would be happy to teach you. As long as he didnt lose the tug test. LOLRocks, homeskillet, 062 and 3 others Thank this. -
Oh and one of the modifications I made for that locomotive was to have the exhaust come out the roof per prototype.
The final image is what the owner changed it to. The new owner has it in New York at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers.Rocks, homeskillet, Rugerfan and 3 others Thank this. -
