Some nights I come into the rest or truck stop and everything is so quiet (no engine is running). Then a truck comes in and runs his engine all night. If bunk heaters were expensive I could see this, but they aren't and they are very cheap to run (a dollar's worth of fuel instead of twenty).
Some drivers tell me that they prefer the high heat from the engine. I tell them that the most heat that comes from the cab is 90 degrees. The sleeper with its larger heater core is 120. But the heat from an Espar bunk heater is a whopping 150 degrees! That's enough to keep anyone toasty all night.
Why isn't everyone using the bunk heaters by now?

I'm totally in agreement on this one. The best nights rest for me is in the middle of nowhere without the engine running. Since I enjoy sleeping in the cold and have plenty of warm blankets and comforters I leave the bunk heater turned off and the window by my head cracked open, then set my alarm to turn on the bunk heater about 10 minutes before crawling out of my cacoon.
I'll idle if temperatures are projected to drop below 20°F to keep the fuel from gelling or if it starts getting ungodly hot.alds and White_Knuckle_Newbie Thank this. -
I'm with you in my heart, but with that said some drivers don't have APUs or bunk heaters. Their companies just don't put them in. Maybe in another few years this will change.

May be running a fridge and other electronics off the inverter and have to keep engine running so the batteries don't go flat.

Sheesh, the things people whine about! If you're gonna drive a truck, then grow up and learn to accept things as they are.
Frankly, I miss the old days when nobody ever shut off their truck for any reason.Shanebklyn, BigRigBillyTrucking, SoDel and 11 others Thank this. -
Not everybody has a bunk heater or it doesn't work.

I sleep better when my engine is running, I like the sound and the gentle rocking.

People who run their trucks in a quiet truck stop deserve what they get when they park next to me.
