The heavy smoke coming out is from carbon build up, do service as states above.
I suspect the reason it runs while the truck is on may be due to the heater's low voltage cut off setting. See this video for how to adjust that.

Im also guessing the water temp sensor part# 41-6538 went out which is causing high engine coolant temp and shutting it down? Could also be a fuse as I seen on 1 video on Youtube so I gotta check that as wellblairandgretchen and gokiddogo Thank this. -
Espar heaters need regular maintenance. The kit you ordered will get you up and running, super easy to service. The fuel filter is mounted outside, easy to spot as it will be mounted at 15° to 45° degrees.
This one also addresses the fuel filter.
I’ve been told to never operate an Espar less than 20 minutes minimum as any less will result in air port clogging up. Should also be run 20 minutes per month year round.

Also Im 90% this is the water temp sensor I need to buy to replace the 1 I have that is maybe bad? It sits behind the water pump, I called ThermoKing and they want $180 no thanksAttached Files:
