Then how do people store and eat perishable food on their trucks if they hardly use them? I pretty much outright refuse to eat out of truck stops with very limited exceptions. I can count on one hand how many times i’ve actually eaten fast food on the road in the last year. I’d very much rather make my own food. It’s healthier and more importantly it’s a lot less expensive

My last truck I did a lot of ag exempt stuff and could pretty much keep rolling as much as I wanted up until I leased to Tralo and had to run legal. When I was running 800-1000 miles a day the last thing I wanted to do was stop and cook, plus it was nice to get out of the truck and walk around a bit in the middle of the night. You know where to get food and what paces to stay away from. Plus if your running ag exempt or guys are running paper logs it makes it easier to wait on your friends to sit and eat and then run together wherever you’re going.

When I pulled pneumatic our back hauls to Garden City were ag exempt. Could run to Grand Island and catch an hour or two nap, have them wake you up when they got there, eat at Thunder Road, then take off and drive all night to Garden City to unload and be ready to wash out when the shop guys showed up.

When you’re not around your friends and you’re doing something where you have to follow the hours of service it definitely makes it easier to keep to yourself and eat in the truck. But when you have some flexibility with your time and you know your friends are around it’s nice to get out and eat a meal.

Also I texted my brother this morning and he said he’s had his current truck 14 months now and the fridge has never been turned on. He said he would use it for drinks but he can’t reach it from the seat. Lol.

Running open deck, it is very similar. By the time you load, secure and tarp. Then try to turn a few miles before the day is over, the last thing you want to do is cook. Usually a shower and maybe some Campbells soup in the microwave and hit the sack. I do cook out of the truck when I can, but there are a lot of days that I just don't have the time or energy to do it. Not to mention, I have some meat in the freezer, but with an erratic schedule, taking it out to thaw, sometimes it sits there thawed for days before I have the time to cook and it looks kinda funky after a while, so I chuck it.

It’s nice to just get out of truck for a bit and eat at a restaurant. And not truckstop slop. I stop daily in the afternoon at a TS just long enough to get a little fuel and shower. And depart long before Haji and boys show up to tear your bumper off. Then I park at whatever HD or Lowe’s I’m delivering to and walk over to a restaurant.

i get your points but i still can’t imagine throwing that kind of money away these days. It’s a lot cheaper to make a sandwich than to eat out all the time

    but to each their own

Kwik Trip is one of the few exceptions i have while on the road. They actually have decent food that you would want to eat.

Even at home i very rarely go out to eat. We tend to eat out more than i’d like anyway due to my roommate, not me. In fact, i rarely leave the house at all on hometime. I’d much rather make something at home or grab something from the grocery store. You all can call me an introvert and cheapskate. I wear those badges proudly

When I am not working the last thing that I want to do is run the roads going here there and everywhere.

Anyone paid on a 1099 still gets the meal allowance deduction on their taxes.

I like cooking on the weekend and prepping my meals for the week. But if I went back to what I was doing before I doubt I’d want to toss a container in the microwave. When you’re sitting in the seat 18+ hours a day sometimes it’s nice to get out.

I’m with you on this one! I’m an introvert as well. I just like to be around people sometimes. Whatever they sell at a restaurant I can make at home and save a lot of money… And, I don’t have to leave any tip for those who give terrible service. I’d rather eat an exotic garlic bologna sandwich most days than to sit and wait 45 minutes for someone in a dirty axx kitchen to cook something.
Exotic bologna sandwich has mustard, mayo, hot pepper cheese, lettuce & tomato on wheat bread. Good Stuff!!
