Is against the law to mount gps or phone to windshield?

I've heard that some people have been cited for that.

They most certainly have.. if they are mounted, they better be mounted to be out of the direct line of sight through the windshield. Some drivers get ridiculous with sometimes three things mounted to the windshield.. this is why they had to crack down on it.

Some jurisdictions have regulations that state you cannot have anything mounted inside the sweep of the windshield wipers.

I've been given verbal warning in Minnesotta for windshield mounted GPS and have been told Wisconsin will give citation for anything on your windshield.
You can have it on your dash in front of windshield but not on the glass.
    Crazy.

Given the inconsistent enforcement and the fact a GPS will pick up a signal just fine even if it is mounted in the sleeper, why mount it to the windshield? I never did. Mine was always mounted to the dash. It's easier to reach there too.

heard the same story, my gps is mounted on top of the dash, but my dash cam is mounted on the window, passenger side very top. Got inspected before and he didn't say anything about it

GA was really strict when I lived there and went through the weight stations on my way home. They told me a good "rule" to go by is keep it as close to the windows edge as possible "low and away". try to keep it within 4 inches or so if the windows edge and not many will mess with you.

I guess I have been lucky and never been hassled over it. My GPS is mounted to the windshield at the bottom near the dash and to the right of the center post. No one has ever given me a word over its location.

I've been inspected about a dozen times in the last 3 years.
