I don't understand why they do that? Give you hard time while employed, then you leave and they want you back.

Doesn't make sense. And it costs them money.

I know this is an old thread, but it's still relevant.
That statement should have an asterisk. There is no federal law governing private business. However if it's a government contract that falls under the Service Contract Act that vacation would have to be paid.

the only "government contracts" i have ever dealt with was when i was turning wrenches at the garage, we had the GSA contract to service thier various vehicles at thier various g'ment offices.

glad to know it's covered in that situation, otherwise, the ordinary schmoe, is screwed.

Great advice unless you know ahead of time you're about to be fired.

One employer who had an especially awful rep for firing the good people and keeping the crappy people - in the name of 'diversity and inclusion' - had become too predictable.

An exemplary work history didn't matter, only one's adherence and lip service to what is now known as 'anti racist' dogma. Was told they had the 'war party' waiting for me. I stopped at about 100 miles out and waited them out. Fueled and parked at the 24 hour Penske facility they used.

Parked the truck and walked away, catching a cab to the facility to pick up my car. Otherwise, they would have demanded I leave my stuff, including luggage and tools in the truck, supposively to be shipped to my house by UPS at some point. Nope, not going to happen.

Being white, the police would have been onsite to escort me off of the property. If white and fired, they didn't miss a trick trying to humiliate you, but I wouldn't give them the satisfaction. I put my company phone, fuel-hotel-company credit cards through the mail slot in the front door - the cards in an envelope of course. Yes, professional shills were par for the course for this employer also.

My previous employer just prior had phoned me at home, told me I was fired and not to show up or the police would be called - I went by in broad daylight the following day and dropped the fuel card in their front door. The people I met outside were unusually quiet, apparently aware of what had transpired.

Companies like that get the kind of drivers they deserve. In a couple of weeks they won't even remember your name or what you looked like.

I would have been disappointed if they had forgotten about me so quickly. I was the ONLY driver at the time who knew our entire system (except the warehouse) and could immediately fill in for any driver on any of the routes in our district (five state area). I was once sent 'out of district' to fill in on a route as no one was available - odd but flattered.

I departed the employer in question about 20 years ago. About five years back, there was a particularly disturbing news story out of Northern Kentucky involving a then current employee of the same employer at a different facility (not a driver) who murdered a 6yo boy in his bed after breaking in during the middle of the night - you know, one of those 'senseless random crimes' designations designed to deflect from the sorry truth. The perp had no connection whatsoever to the town or region as he worked and lived in Northern Indiana his entire life.

Neighbors reported they had seen the guy driving around the previous day like he was looking for something or someone. The child's dad held the perp at gun point until police arrived (a crying shame). When the perp's employer was asked for comment: "we have nothing to say" which really surprised me as the perp was the stereotype of the employer's 'favorite pets'.

Can't say I was surprised when remembering what I witnessed during my time there. The OP's two line 'story' isn't worth commenting on.

It’s basically like the psycho ex when you finally decide you’ve had enough of their BS, so they decide to increase the torment even further.

Haven’t read the whole thread and I’m sure it’s been mentioned…..cash your vacation out as soon as you get it. Bank it and use it for its intended purpose whenever you need it.

Not always easy to do. Also with bonuses.

Dispatch will chase a driver away, then the company keeps the money. I'm sure they get a percentage.
