Disclaimer: I came here with the mindset that I want to work hard and make as much money as possible. Work/Life balance is not necessarily a priority for me. In 6 months, I went on Hometime 1 time for 6 days. I hated where I worked and hated my living situation before I came to Magnum. I was sick of everything and needed a way out. If this sounds like you, this review may appeal to you.
Disclaimer: I was scrolling back and forth and making all kinds of edits and adding stuff later as I write this review. I hope it makes some sense lol
I averaged 3,041 paid miles per week (my actual driven miles is lower than that). If you're trying to calculate my pay... this doesn't factor in layover pay, detention, etc.
i only took Hometime once and it was easy to get approved with no hassle. So not too much experience with that for me. I gave 10 days advanced notice.
There were 2 instances when I sat without a load. They lasted no more than 1 hour.
There was 1 instance when I sat for 5 days. This was due to a shipper not being prepared. Dispatch and I were on the same page the whole time and they made it worth my time. I was paid an accelerated layover amount due to the unique situation. Since I get a lot of miles and don't take much Hometime, this situation was more of a neutral experience than a negative in my mind. I was compensated well for it and it was a nice break.
I tend to show up to appointments early and I guess get lucky. So I don't get detention very often. I think it's usually on multidrops when I collect detention. I've had some places where I got like 9 hours of detention. Where else can you get paid to sleep?
I have never been asked or forced to do anything I don't feel comfortable doing. If an appointment is too tight or impossible to make on time, I have never had a problem getting an appointment changed. Or dispatch will just tell me "understood, just get there when you can and they'll work you in." I never try to hide it if I'll be late. Especially since I'm only late if it's something out of my control. *knock on wood*
I have learned the hard way that it's best to call ahead to get your next load. (See previous comment about sitting with no load for an hour.) now, more often than not, I get preplan without talking to anyone or they call me first. They know I'll take whatever so it's probably easy for them to just give me a load. It keeps me busy and that's the way I like it.
I haven't had any issues getting paid for reimbursements, miles, etc.
I don't use the company medical/dental benefits, so I can't speak for those. I am a veteran and use the VA.
I make myself available for anything and don't turn down any loads.
The biggest thing I like about being here is nobody bothers me. I get my load assignments and I execute them. Nobody is checking up on me or telling me where/when to stop. The only time they ask for ETAs is if they're trying to help me with assigning my next load. I'm trusted to get the job done. This means a lot to me.
That being said, it's up to me to maintain my truck. I have to schedule maintenance with the shop if my truck is due for a PM. I need to make sure my permits are up to date. If something goes wrong, I need to report it so the shop can take care of it. With great freedom comes great responsibility.
A ton of our customers have on site parking. Some are even right next door to a truck stop. This is amazingly helpful.
I've pulled a grand total of 3 hazmat loads.
I have #### in 0 bags. (Inside joke I guess... go read this entire forum from start to finish lol)
My truck is a 2015 and is so nice. I had one problem where a DEF hose somehow got severed and it had to be replaced. Luckily, it was on Election Day. So I got to sit in the super-nice Peterbilt lounge, drink free coffee and watch the election coverage. So that kinda worked out for me.
Everyone I have come across has been helpful. People in the office, other drivers, people here on the forum. I get along with all the dispatchers.
My biggest gripe is that the training pay wasn't communicated to me very well. I came here thinking it was gonna be 90 days at .36 a mile. Then I heard from other drivers it was 4 months. I waited until after 4 months to ask the Ops Manager... and found out it was 6 months. When it keeps getting pushed back like that (it wasn't getting pushed back, I was just not getting info from the source... it was always 6 months for new drivers) it's easy to start thinking negative or feel like I'm being used. When in reality, I was asking the wrong people and getting excited over incomplete information. I can only blame myself for that.
I get what I came here for (freedom, pay, and the chance to get back on my feet). If I make dispatch's life half as easy as they make mine, I'll be happy with that. This is the first job I've had that I truly enjoy. Rather it's trucking in general that I enjoy or Magnum specifically, well I don't know. But I enjoy my time here.
It's unfortunate that not everyone can have the same experience I'm having. In my past job (pre-trucking) I was Mr. Negative. I didn't like anything. They let me try several different roles, gave me raises when I asked for them (they permanently doubled my pay once when I expressed some frustrations and thoughts of leaving. I stayed for several more months, then came to trucking), put me in charge of other people, bought me equipment I needed in my department, pretty much catered to me. Best employer I could have asked for. But for whatever reason, I couldn't be happy there. I'm glad I made the change I did.Last edited: Feb 20, 2017

Regarding the trailer mix up I'm being paid for the miles and hassle. There was an issue with the unload but Nick addressed immediately.
Missing miles. A single call to payroll fixed the issue. Payroll showed the miles were approved they just weren't showing up on my driver drill down so I was concerned.
In other problems cropped up but they addressed efficiently and professionally.Zata40 Thanks this.
