Driving for Walmart does sound enticing. Yes they have a lot of rules and stuff but they pay their drivers a 6 figure income for basically regional driving. Only problem is that the closest DC to me is in Ottawa, KS…a little over 2 hours from where i live

Ottawa would take awhile to get on at as there’s a huge driver pool in the KC metro. You would have to commute to another DC for a few years. 100k for a five day a week job isn’t that rare anymore. The slip seating, weird rules, and cheerleader co-workers is a bit much for some. Good stable job with a company that isn’t going anywhere. It’s definitely not an exclusive driving job anymore.

Lol $100K for a driving job home on weekends and not working 14 hr days isn’t that common…and don’t forget the works not especially difficult.

Yeah the rules and tattle tales take some adjusting to I’d imagine, but with the way the industry is going heck that’s gonna eventually be everywhere. I’ve had two calls from safety where someone has called in to say my load was incorrectly secured or something was wrong with the truck…if only there had been a problem.

Walmart has long been my fall back if for whatever reason I couldn’t do open deck any longer, though like Snackbar trucking in general may not be in my distant future much longer. These drivers now adays are a trip.

I got my next load for tomorrow around noon today. I pick up at a Keen location in Brunswick headed to TX for Monday. And, load instructions say I need a 53' step, so it sounds like I might be picking up some equipment instead of the last Keen load I had to reject. That was the one with the trailer load of excavator buckets and 5 ragged pallets of the hitch points that would have needed 3 2" straps per pallet because they were only secured to the pallets (that were falling apart as they loaded them) with the cheap light green platic strapping band. I am picking up at a different address this time, so hopefully it'll be a quick and easy load because mother nature is getting ready to dump some major rain in the SE Friday night and into Saturday.

I had one of my most productive hometimes. Got all of the current assignments on the most recent honey-do list, along with some of the previous lists assignments. I even fixed my APU case that the Arlington shop neglected to bolt on properly (missing 2 of the 4 bolts from the lower half of the case). Plus I made Sleepy Joe cry because I did my taxes and I'm making his IRS give me back some of the money I lent them thru last year's taxes on the interest free loan(over paid taxes).

Back in the day it was a way to get a foot in the door. That was when Walmart only had a driving job posted for about 3 days. Being there you'd hear about the upcoming posting and be ready to submit your application as soon as it went live.

Outside of that - hiring area is the big one. Walmart Sterling won't hire anyone more than 50 miles from the DC. The outside carrier has more options for park locations and the pay structure difference means they're not paying drivers to sleep in the truck. Amd while the private fleet guys do make more, it's not that much more than our guys who have been running the account long term - how much of a pay cut would you take to remove a driver facing camera?

I work for a tanker company so I’m not up to par on what van/reefer companies pay anymore. Wal Mart was paying 6 figures 15 years ago. They still pay the same a decade later. I’m not saying it isn’t a great employer, I’m just saying it’s not the exclusive unobtainable job it was 20 years ago.

No, I go past that plant all the time. That’s the truck entrance / exit. Only way the driver could’ve got hung up is if they didn’t have the gear all the way up.

p.s. The railroad is not having a good few months. One of their trains just de-railed up the road a half mile or so about 3-4 months ago.

Well I consider tankers real work and no Walmart is far from exclusive. But for what you can make it’s not that hard a job, it just takes time to get decent seniority and you have to enjoy their brand of koolaid…

I’ve got several friends that have been at Wally for years. Work Mon-Fri. Don’t slip seat. Still bank $100-110 a year. Yes they do micro manage the idiots but do your job and they leave you alone.
